Gottshall Breaks Single-Season Strikeout Record
May 03, 2021 | Softball
Falcons close home portion of schedule Tuesday afternoon
• The BGSU softball Falcons wrap up the home portion of the 2021 schedule with a Tuesday (May 4) doubleheader vs. Western Michigan. Then, BGSU heads to Northern Illinois for a four-game weekend series, before facing WMU in a double-dip in Kalamazoo on Wednesday, May 12.
• Redshirt freshman Payton Gottshall – despite missing nearly a month of the season due to injury – has set a new school record for strikeouts in a season. Gottshall now has 240 strikeouts this spring, breaking the record of 237 set by BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel in 2005.
• Gottshall is poised to blow two more BGSU records out of the water. She is averaging 10.46 strikeouts per seven innings this season, and the school record currently is 8.46 by Vrabel in 2005. To fall below that 8.46 plateau, Gottshall would need to pitch 39 innings without striking out a batter. She is currently averaging 10.40 strikeouts per seven innings in her career, well ahead of Vrabel's school record of 7.12.
• Greta L'Esperance is moving up a number of single-season lists as well. Currently, BGSU's leadoff hitter has 61 hits, the sixth-highest total in school history. And, she has stolen 23 stolen bases this spring, ranking fifth on that list. L'Esperance is currently batting .377, which would put her third on that school single-season chart.
• Miami entered last weekend's series at BGSU ranked second in the nation in runs per game, and the RedHawks had not been held to fewer than two runs in any MAC contest. But, Gottshall limited MU to one run in each of her first two starts in the series. She allowed just an unearned run in Friday's 1-0 RedHawk win, then allowed just two hits in a complete-game effort the next day. In the latter game, Logan Everett had a pinch-hit double to lead off the seventh inning, and L'Esperance had a walk-off single to score pinch-runner Makailah Dees in a 2-1 BG win.
• BGSU trails WMU, 54-34, in the all-time series, and the Falcons trail NIU by a 28-24 count. BG has not faced the Huskies since the 2017 season.
