Buckeyes Strike Late to Down Falcons
August 26, 2021 | Women's Soccer
BGSU opens home portion of schedule Sunday vs. Oakland
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Host Ohio State University scored the go-ahead goal with just over 12 minutes left in the second half, and the Buckeyes went on to a 3-1 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Thursday night (Aug. 26). The non-conference match was held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Kayla Fischer scored a pair of goals for the Buckeyes (2-1-0), and assisted on Chloe Delyser's winning marker.
After a scoreless first half, Fischer got the hosts on the board in the 55th minute. But, sophomore Lacee Bethea quickly answered for the Falcons (0-2-0), tying the score just 2:05 after Fischer's goal. Junior Katie Cox assisted on the Bethea goal.
The match remained tied until just 12:10 remained in regulation, when Delyser scored what proved to be the winning goal. Fischer provided some insurance just 20 seconds later.
Lil Berg made four saves in goal for the third consecutive match. Bailey Kolinski had two stops for the home side.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• For the second time in a five-day span, Lacee Bethea scored a goal on the road against a Big Ten Conference team. Bethea scored just 50 seconds into Sunday's match at Michigan, before finding the net against the Buckeyes on Thursday.
• Bethea now has three career goals, with all three coming on the road. She scored in her collegiate debut, BGSU's season-opening win at Akron in March of 2021.
QUOTING COACH WALKER
"We currently feel like it's Groundhog Day. As was the case in the game at Michigan, we held one of the best teams in the country to a 1-1 draw until very late in the game. Â We competed and held our own for large portions of the game tonight."
"What we are finding with the Power Five Conference teams is that they are so athletic and they wear you down over time. Our concentration levels start to drop off as we get tired. Credit to Ohio State; they had a couple of moments of brilliance, and that was the difference in the game."
"We are competing well and making life very difficult for our opponents. I felt we deserved more out of the game. We have a very challenging schedule, Â but we love it, and it's going to make us better!"
