Why I Give by Phil Villapiano
A wise man once said, "to whom much is given, much will be required".Ā Ā I think about that verse when I reflect on the beautiful life that I have led and continue to lead today.Ā Ā Getting here required a lot of things to play out in my favor, and I've gotten a lot of help along the way.
Coming back to BG for homecoming reminds me that college was really the point in my life where the light switch turned on.Ā Ā You learn so much and become a grown up during these years on campus.Ā Ā All the right things happened for me at Bowling Green.Ā Ā Coming from New Jersey like I did, you even learn that there are people in Ohio who are not exactly like the people I grew up around.Ā Ā Great people in New Jersey and equally great people in Ohioā¦just different experiences that you learn from and grow.

I also learned that hard work was required both in the classroom and on the football field.Ā Ā I had really good teachers who helped me become the person I was when I graduated.Ā Ā I appreciate how they molded me, and I recognize it now more than ever.
I remember seeing how my Dad gave back to his school, DePauw University in Indiana.Ā Ā That was a lesson he gave me without even knowing it.Ā Ā You give back to say thank you for the good things in life that have happened to you.Ā Ā I was just in Las Vegas for the Raiders opening game.Ā Ā I am blessed to be able to give back to that organization, just like I give back to Bowling Green, my high school, my church.Ā Ā If you've got a great life going for you, I think you look back and say, "my parents did so much for me, but there were a lot of influences on the outside that I need to give back to."
I've been around BGSU Football for more than 50 years.Ā Ā I realize you can't win big every year, and I've seen this program at its highest and its lowest.Ā Ā We have a wonderful football program, and I love when we win.Ā Ā But even when we lose, we don't jump off the boat.Ā Ā We stick with it.Ā Ā We're in it for the long haul.Ā Ā I'm with Coach Loeffler and this team and I am here to support in both word and deed.Ā Ā I hope every Falcon who cares about this school would do the same.
