September 04, 2021 | Volleyball
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Bowling Green Falcons volleyball team (3-2) won their second match at the Shamrock Invitational, defeating Milwaukee (1-4) in five sets. The Falcons fell behind with a first-set loss but responded with victories in sets two and three. After a strong Milwaukee performance gave the Panthers a fourth-set win, the Orange and Brown closed on a 5-2 run to win the set and match.
Â
How It Happened
Set 1: BGSU 23, Milwaukee 25
The Falcons started fast, scoring their first five points on kills. Milwaukee put together multiple runs to build an 18-12 lead, but BGSU would rally to tie it at 19. Four of the seven Falcon points came on blocks, a category they dominated throughout the match. After the Panthers took a 23-20 lead, the Orange and Brown responded with three consecutive points to tie it again. Milwaukee would record back-to-back kills to clinch the opening set.
Â
Set 2: BGSU 25, Milwaukee 19
A common theme for BGSU is playing in competitive sets, and today's sets were no different. For the majority of the second set, the Falcons and Panthers remained within two points of each other. The set featured 15 ties and six lead changes, but it was the Orange and Brown who closed on a run to clinch the set. With the score tied 18-18, BGSU scored six straight points, with four of those coming on blocks. Nikolija Katanic played a part in all four, with three block assists and one solo block. Katelyn Meyer clinched the set with a kill, her fifth of the set.
Â
Set 3: BGSU 26, Milwaukee 24
For most of yet another close battle, the teams remained within three points of each other. With this set tied at 16, the Falcons took advantage of two Milwaukee attack errors and went on a 7-2 run. Katelyn Meyer registered three consecutive kills to cap the run, but the Panthers would rally and eventually tie the set at 24. The Falcons weathered the storm and scored the next two points, with Kat Mandly's kill giving BGSU a 2-1 set lead.
Â
Set 4: BGSU 17, Milwaukee 25
The Panthers were very efficient in the fourth set, hitting .282 and leading the entire set. The Falcons remained in striking distance early, but Milwaukee's 7-2 run late in the set proved too much to overcome. Indrova, Mandly, and Meyer each had three kills in the set.
Â
Set 5: BGSU 15, Milwaukee 12
Milwaukee rode their momentum from the fourth set to take an early 4-2, but the Falcons responded with a 4-0 run. The first three points came on kills by Mandly, Kidwell, and Meyer, with the fourth point coming on a Kidwell and Laube block. Milwaukee was resilient, cutting into the Falcon lead and eventually tying the set at 10. The Falcons closed the frame on a 5-2 run, with Indrova's kill and ace sparking the streak. Laube, Kidwell, and Meyer registered the final three points, all on kills. Meyer, who scored set points twice last night, scored two more set points today.

"We are very proud of our team's gritty performance against another gritty team that pushed us and made us better. We did not play our best volleyball, but we still found a way to win. I was happy to see that we learned from last week and played well in the decisive fifth set."
