Falcons To Host RedHawks In Midweek MACtion Match Wednesday Night

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program will stay home at the Stroh Center to host the Miami (OH) RedHawks for a midweek MACtion match on Wednesday (Oct. 19). Playing the first match of a home-and-home series this season, the Falcons and RedHawks are set for a 6:00 p.m. serve at the Stroh. The second match of the series is scheduled for Nov. 16 in Oxford and will conclude the regular season.
The Falcons will enter the match coming off a sweep over Central Michigan last week with three matches ahead this week. The Orange and Brown will first host the RedHawks on Wednesday before traveling to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles for two matches in Ypsilanti this weekend. Bowling Green will take a 12-7 overall record into the week while holding a 7-1 MAC standing to lead the MAC East.
Miami leads the all-time series between the two teams with a record of 51-38, but it's been the Falcons dominating the matchup of late. The Orange and Brown have won nine of the last 10 meetings versus Miami, including six straight victories. The Falcons have been the victors in seven straight meetings inside the Stroh Center. Miami's last win in the series came in 2019 while their last win in Bowling Green dates back to the 2016 season.
At The Match
The match against the RedHawks will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night at the Stroh Center. BGSU Faculty and Staff who present their University ID to the ticket office (inside the Stroh Center) will receive complimentary admission for the match. Faculty and Staff who bring guests will also receive complimentary admission.
Reading The RedHawks
The Miami RedHawks will enter Wednesday's match at the bottom of the Mid-American Conference, being 1-7 within the MAC. Miami's lone conference win came on Sept. 30 against Kent State, winning in five sets over the Golden Flashes. Since then, Miami has lost five straight matches, including being swept 3-0 in four straight. Miami lost on the road to both Western Michigan and Northern Illinois before dropping a pair at home to Eastern Michigan. The other wins for Miami this season came against Bradley, Marshall, Southern Indiana, Duquesne and Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The RedHawks are led by freshman outside hitter Ellie Hanson. Hanson currently leads Miami in aces (22) while being second in kills (180) and second in digs (171). On the attack, Hanson is joined at the top by senior Allyson Severance who has landed 198 kills for the RedHawks. As for digs, Miami is paced redshirt freshman Brooke Jackson with 182. Severance is currently third in digs with 146 while Jackson comes in second for aces with 19.
Staying Hot At Home
The Falcons are in the midst of a five-match win streak when playing at home after sweeping Central Michigan last weekend. Overall, BGSU is 7-1 inside the Stroh Center this season with the only loss coming to then-No. 22 Western Kentucky. Since the start of the 2020 season, the Falcons hold a record of 27-2 when playing at home with their last home conference loss being during the 2020 campaign. In addition to the success at home, the Orange and Brown have won seven of their last eight contests.
Ace Up The Sleeve
The Falcons saw success at the service line last weekend, landing a season-high 12 aces in Saturday's match alone. The tally moved the Falcons into the top spot in the MAC for aces per set, averaging 1.68 on the season. Individually, Yelianiz Torres leads the way with an average of 0.38 per set, sixth in the conference. However, it was Petra Indrova and Alexis Mettille that led the way on Saturday with five aces each in the match. The total marked a season-high for Indrova and a career-high for Mettille.
On The Attack
The Falcons are undefeated this season when logging a higher hitting percentage than their opponent, being 10-0 in such matches. Bowling Green has picked up two wins while having a lower hitting percentage than their opponent as well. Those two wins came in the two five-set matches for BGSU this season, being against Mississippi State and Western Michigan. Entering Wednesday's match, Bowling Green has a .212 hitting percentage on the season while the Miami RedHawks have a mark of .162.
