BGSU junior gets it done on the pitch, in the classroom
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) -- Bowling Green State University women's soccer standout Maya Dean has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday (Nov. 2). Dean earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Dean, a native of Traverse City, Mich. (West), had yet another solid week as the Falcons went 2-0, including a MAC Tournament victory. She helped the Falcons post a late-game comeback, as BGSU – trailing with under three minutes to go – scored twice in 51 seconds for a 2-1 win at Northern Illinois to end the regular season on Thursday (Oct. 27). That win clinched the third seed for the MAC Tournament and a home game in the quarterfinal round.
Then, on Sunday (Oct. 30), Dean scored the Falcons' second goal midway through the second half to give BGSU a 2-0 win over Western Michigan in that quarterfinal-round matchup.
Earlier this week, Dean was named to the All-MAC First Team.
On the season, Dean has 16 points including five goals and six assists. All 16 points have come against MAC opponents, with 14 points in league regular-season play and the goal vs. WMU.
In the classroom, Dean has a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average as a biology major.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. Nominees must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and must have performed well during the previous week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
The Falcons (9-5-4) head to Western New York for the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament. BGSU, the third seed for the tourney, takes on second-seeded Ball State on Thursday (Nov. 3), with first touch set for 7:30 p.m. at UB Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y.
