Rockets Stop Falcons in Glass City
February 12, 2022 | Women's Basketball
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team suffered an 80-51 loss to the University of Toledo on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12). The Mid-American Conference game was held at Savage Arena.
The Rockets (19-4, 13-1 MAC) had advantages in points in the paint and second-chance points. The home team led by five points after the first quarter and slowly pulled away.Â
Zoe Miller led the Falcons (11-10, 6-6 MAC) with nine points off the bench, while three of her teammates scored eight apiece. That trio included Elissa Brett, Kadie Hempfling and Amy Velasco.
Quinesha Lockett led the hosts with 24 points, while Sophia Wiard added 16 and Jessica Cook 12.
Saturday's game was the Falcons' first of a three-game-in-five-days span, and it also began a stretch in which BG will play six games in 12 days.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a tough loss for us. Toledo has a really good team, but we've got to learn some things quickly. I think Toledo did a lot of things well today, but there are also some areas where we definitely need to do better. We've got a quick turnaround, so we need to work on some things and be ready to go by Monday night."
FIRST QUARTER
• After Jessica Cook made a putback on the game's opening possession, Elissa Brett converted a driving layup late in the shot clock. But, a long two-pointer by Sammi Mikonowicz was followed by another Cook putback.
• A Nyla Hampton steal led to a pair of Jocelyn Tate free throws, and after a Rocket three-pointer, Brett hit two shots from the stripe.
• It was a three-point game after a nifty Kenzie Lewis bounce pass found a cutting Hampton for a wide-open layup, but back-to-back buckets gave the hosts a 15-8 lead before Morgan Sharps capped the first-quarter scoring with a pull-up jumper.
SECOND QUARTER
• UT scored the first four points of the quarter, with a Quinesha Lockett steal and layup giving the Rockets a 19-10 lead and prompting a BGSU timeout. Kadie Hempfling took a Brett pass and hit a short-corner jumper, but Lockett scored the game's next five points to give the hosts a 24-12 lead.
• Brett and Zoe Miller each hit twice from the foul line, while Sharps hit a nifty driving layup with the shot clock nearing zero. Amy Velasco's charity tosses cut the UT lead to 33-20, and a Sophie Dziekan pass resulted in a Lewis bucket in the final minute of the half. BG trailed by 12, 35-23, at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• The teams traded points over the first two minutes, with Hempfling hitting two free throws and Hampton converting a nifty reverse layup after a baseline drive. But, a Sophia Wiard three-pointer was part of a 9-0 UT run that gave the Rockets a 48-29 lead.Â
• Velasco and Miller teamed up on several occasions at the offensive end. Miller found Velasco for a three-ball after some nifty inside-out passing, and Velasco was fouled on a drive and hit both shots.
• Then, Velasco fed Miller for a straightaway triple, and Miller knocked down two charity tosses at the 2:35 mark to cut UT's lead to 54-39. But, UT scored the next five points to quell the Falcons' momentum.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hempfling banked home a shot after a pass from Dziekan at the seven-minute mark, and Hempfling got to the line and made a pair.
• Madisen Parker found Dziekan for an and-one layup in the latter stages of the quarter, but it was not enough to make a dent in the Rocket lead.
