Falcon phenom earns honor for fifth time in her career
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Bowling Green State University softball standout Payton Gottshall has been named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week. The announcement was made by the league office on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 15).
Gottshall earns the honor for the first time this season and the fifth time in her young BGSU career. She also was listed among the NFCA's top performances of the week.
Gottshall, a native of Massillon, Ohio (Perry H.S.), picked up right where she left off last season during the opening weekend of the 2022 campaign. She posted a 3-0 record and an ERA of just 0.74 during BGSU's trip to the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Ill.
She opened the season by firing a two-hit shutout against Western Illinois on Friday (Feb. 11). In that victory, she took a perfect game into the fifth inning before allowing a two-out single. Gottshall struck out 14 and did not walk a batter in that win.
The next day, she picked up a victory vs. Eastern Illinois, allowing just two earned runs and five hits in a five-inning stint. Gottshall struck out 10 in that game, issuing one walk.
On Sunday (Feb. 13), Gottshall fired a one-hit shutout vs. Butler, striking out nine without walking a batter. She surrendered an infield single to lead off the first, then retired the next 13 hitters. The only two runners to reach base after that leadoff hit did so via errors.
Gottshall struck out 33 batters while walking just one, and she allowed opponents to hit just .118 against her on the weekend.
In her career, Gottshall is now 34-17 with 12 complete-game shutouts and 443 strikeouts in 307 innings of work.
BGSU, 4-1 on the young season, is idle this weekend, before heading to Raleigh, N.C., to play five games in the NC State Invitational (Feb. 25-27). The Falcons are scheduled to play two games each against Central Connecticut State and Delaware and one vs. the host school, North Carolina State.
