Falcons Host Oakland Before Opening MAC Play At NIU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team will play two matches this weekend. They begin with their final non-conference match, a home contest against Oakland on Friday, March 18. The Falcons and Golden Grizzlies will meet at the Perrysburg Tennis Center at 1 p.m. ET Bowling Green will head to Rockford, Illinois, for the 2022 MAC Opener, meeting Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 20. The first conference contest of the year will be held at the Boylan Tennis Center. Bowling Green currently has a 3-7 overall record.

Last Time Out
The Falcons competed twice during spring break, playing both matches in California. They opened the weekend with a 5-2 loss to Point Loma. The Falcons saw success in doubles play, sweeping all three matches. The duos of Hannah Neuman & Selina Karg, Maru Poppe & Ioanna Tsadari, and Florencia Fuentes & Annika Vetter all claimed a victory. Karg also added a win in singles play.

Two days later, the Falcons were defeated by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, once again by a score of 5-2. Neuman and Karg paired for another win in doubles, with Tsadari and Karg winning the No. 1 and 2 singles matches, respectively.

Opponent Outlook: Oakland
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are 4-4 this season, with a 3-3 mark in road matches. They most recently competed against Chicago State, winning 5-2. The Golden Grizzlies are 4-1 in their last five matches. Liza Mladentseva has played No. 1 singles in the last four matches, winning all four times. On March 10, doubles partners Yasmin Glazbrook and Nirva Patel were named Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week. The duo won all four matches during their spring break trip, helping Oakland to a 3-1 record.

The Falcons and Golden Grizzlies have met once, a 9-0 victory for Bowling Green during the 1988-89 season.

Opponent Outlook: Northern Illinois
The Northern Illinois Huskies enter MAC play after winning their final three non-conference matches. The Huskies have had at least one player recognized by the MAC in four weeks, led by doubles pairing Erika Dimitriev and Anastasia Rakita. The duo has been named Doubles Athletes of the Week twice, with Reagan Welch winning Singles Athlete of the Week once to give NIU a sweep. Rakita and Diana Lukyanova have each earned Singles Athlete of the Week once. The Falcons and Huskies have one common opponent, Notre Dame, with both teams falling to the Fighting Irish.

Series History: Northern Illinois
This will be the 35^th meeting between the Falcons and Huskies, with BGSU holding the 19-15 series advantage. The last four meetings have favored the Orange and Brown, including two last year. All four have been decided by a score of 6-1. The Falcons won their MAC opener over NIU last season, with Ioanna Tsadari and Selina Karg each winning a singles and doubles match. The most recent showdown was April 23, 2021, with Karg once again claiming a singles win. In doubles play, Karg, Tsadari, Laura Maia Silveira, and Hannah Neuman all earned a victory. In both matches, Diana Lukyanova won the lone point for the Huskies with a singles victory.
