Falcon phenom earns honor for second time in 2022
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Bowling Green State University softball standout Payton Gottshall has been named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week. The announcement was made by the league office on Tuesday afternoon (March 8).
Gottshall earns the honor for the second time this season and the sixth time in her young BGSU career. She also was listed among the NFCA's top performances of the week, also for the second time in 2022.
Gottshall, a native of Massillon, Ohio (Perry H.S.), went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.58 and an opponent batting average of just .103 at the UE Invitational over the weekend. On Friday (March 4), she threw a complete-game four-hitter, walking one batter and striking out 10, in a 4-1 win over Creighton.
Then, she was nothing short of spectacular vs. Green Bay in a 13-0 run-rule win on Saturday (March 5). Gottshall threw a perfect game against the Phoenix, striking out all 15 batters she faced. It was just the third perfect game in school history, but the second for Gottshall as a Falcon.
In that Green Bay game, Gottshall needed only 56 pitches to retire those 15 batters, and threw 46 of those 56 pitches for strikes. She threw a first-pitch strike to 12 of the 15 hitters, and only two batters went as deep as a 2-2 count.
Then, on Sunday (March 6), she threw four innings of no-hit ball vs. host Evansville, striking out seven, before that game was halted due to lightning and declared a no-contest with BGSU leading 2-0 (and the Falcons had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the fifth).
In 12 innings on the weekend, Gottshall walked just one batter and struck out 25.
The stats from the UE game do not count, but unofficially, Gottshall had an ERA of just 0.44 and a miniscule opponent BA of .080 on the weekend.
BGSU is 9-4 on the season, and the Falcons head to Nashville for five games in the Lady Bison Invitational, hosted by Lipscomb, this weekend.
