BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The eighth annual Ziggy Awards were held Sunday evening (April 24), as the Bowling Green State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics held an awards show on campus at the Student Union. BGSU Athletics honors and recognizes its student-athletes and supporters of the department during the event each year. The Ziggy Awards follow in the tradition of the former Athletics Honors Night.
Jensen Lukacsko, of the men's soccer team, and Swim & Dive's Daisy Platts earned the highest honor given to a BGSU student-athlete – The Falcon Medal of Honor. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who embody the essence of the qualities BGSU Athletics hold important for all student-athletes.
Platts, who picked up three awards on the night, was named Female Athlete of the Year, while Jake Erlandson of men's soccer was named Male Athlete of the Year. Platts and Lukackso were named the department's Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Track & field's Zaresha Neal and men's soccer's Michael Montemurri were named the Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, while men's soccer's Alberto Anaya and volleyball's Kat Mandly were the Newcomers of the Year. The Comeback Performance of the Year Award was given to football's Nate Needham, who after struggles in 2020 came back to be one of the nation's elite placekickers and earning first-team All-America honors.
The hockey and tennis teams were recognized for having the highest team grade point averages in the department for men's and women's programs, respectively. Swimmer Malika Haver was the Community Service Individual of the Year, and the women's golf team was the Community Service Team of the Year for the second year.
Chris Bullins from the BGSU's Office of the Dean of Students picked up the Distinguished Service Award. Lisa Stevens '86 won the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
