May 14, 2022 | Softball
OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team bowed out of the Mid-American Conference Tournament with an 11-0 loss to Miami University on Saturday (May 14).
The Falcons (32-19), the number-four seed for the four-team tournament, fell behind early as the top-seeded RedHawks (39-15-1) scored twice in the first inning before putting together a six-run second inning.
Payton Gottshall, Sophie Weber and Reagan Williamson were named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Gottshall threw 442 pitches, including 291 strikes, in under 48 hours during BGSU's time in Oxford. She fired 282 pitches on Friday alone as the fourth-seeded Falcons (32-19) knocked second-seeded Ohio and third-seeded Central Michigan out of the tournament.
On Saturday, Gottshall left the game in the second inning to a standing ovation from the Miami fans as well as the BGSU fans.
Senior Kiara Hurley pitched the final two-plus innings for the Falcons, with Williamson and Greta L'Esperance picking up hits against the RedHawks.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"Our team's got a lot of grit, a lot of fight and a lot of pride. We didn't have the easiest path, coming into the tournament as the number-four seed and then losing the first game. But we showed a lot of heart to come back and earn their way to today's game. Our team proved a lot to themselves and to others in this tournament, and we will walk away with our heads held high."
NOTEWORTHY
• The Falcons now have an all-time record of 26-35 in league tourney games.
• Payton Gottshall increased her school-record total to 356 strikeouts this season. She now has 766 career strikeouts, and is just two away from tying the school record of 768, amassed by BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel.
• BGSU's total of 32 wins is the program's highest since the 2012 team won 36 games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The RedHawks jumped on top in the first inning. Karli Spaid singled and scored on a Riley Coyne homer.

• Spaid's three-run homer gave the hosts a five-run lead in the bottom of the second, and Holly Blaska followed with a homer as well. Kiara Hurley replaced Payton Gottshall in the circle, but Coyne's second long ball of the game made it an eight-run margin.
• Hurley allowed a Lily Wilmot double to lead off the third inning, but then retired the next three hitters in order.
•Williamson reached on a Miami error in the fourth inning, and Carver reached base for the second time in the game with a two-out walk. A wild pitch by MU starter Brianna Pratt advanced the runners, but Sophie Weber's drive was tracked down in right-center to end the inning.
• Spaid led off the RedHawk fourth with a homer, and Kate Kobayashi also homered in that inning to cap the scoring.
• BGSU got a pair of two-out baserunners in the fifth, as Greta L'Esperance laced a single up the middle and Peyton Dolejs was hit by a pitch. But, a hard grounder to second base produced the game's final out.
