BGSU slated to play 3 games in Kent prior to next week's MAC Tournament
UP NEXT IN FALCON SOFTBALL
• BGSU at Kent State • May 7-8 • Kent, Ohio •
• The BGSU softball team wraps up the regular-season schedule with a weekend trip to Northeast Ohio. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons will face Kent State in a three-game series at the Diamond at Dix. The teams are scheduled to play a Saturday (May 7) doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m., and a Sunday (May 8) single game that starts at noon.
• Live stats and a live video stream will be available for all three games.
• The Falcons are 29-15 overall and 15-9 in Mid-American Conference play, good for third place in the 11-team league. BGSU has clinched a spot in next week's MAC Tournament.
BG swept Central Michigan in a Wednesday (May 4) twinbill at Meserve Field, reducing the Falcons' league tournament magic number to one, and a Miami win over Ball State on Thursday clinched a tourney berth for the Orange and Brown. MU (23-3 MAC) has clinched the MAC regular-season title and the right to host the conference tournament, while Ohio (16-8 MAC) and the Falcons have clinched a trip to Oxford. The four-team field also will include either CMU (15-10 MAC) or BSU (13-13 MAC).
• In each of the last three series, BGSU has won two games, in the process passing that opponent in the MAC standings. The Falcons went 2-1 vs. both Akron and BSU before sweeping the two-game set vs. Central Michigan.
• Payton Gottshall had yet another spectacular day in the circle on Wednesday. She threw a pair of complete games against CMU, and allowed just an unearned run and three hits in 14 total innings of work.
• A pair of seniors each picked up a game-winning RBI vs. the Chippewas. Sarah Gonzalez singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of the opener, a 3-1 BGSU win. Then, fellow fifth-year Falcon Payton Hamm opened the scoring in the nightcap, with a two-run single as part of a three-run second inning. BG won game two by a 5-0 final.
• For Gottshall, Wednesday's two wins give her 23 victories this season, the second-highest total in school history and the highest in 30 years. Jody Record holds the BGSU mark with 27 wins in 1992.
• The six-time MAC Pitcher of the Week is 23-9 with a 1.27 ERA and a school-record 314 strikeouts in 203 1/3 innings. She has an opponent batting average of just .153 on the year. Gottshall currently leads the MAC in nine statistical categories, and is ranked 17th or higher in the nation on eight of those lists. She is second in the country in total strikeouts, fourth in innings pitched, sixth in wins, eighth in strikeout-to-walk ratio, 12th in shutouts, 13th in both strikeouts per seven innings and hits allowed per seven innings and 17th in ERA. She is the first player in school history to fire two perfect games in the same season.
• At the plate, Greta L'Esperance is batting a BGSU-best .396, and also leads the Falcons in stolen bases (30) and runs scored (38). She is tied for third in steals and ranks sixth in runs on those BGSU single-season lists.
• L'Esperance leads the MAC in stolen bases and steals per game, and is ranked 14th in the nation in both categories. She has 59 steals in her BGSU career, and has moved into third place in school history on that list. L'Esperance currently has a career batting average of .368, which puts her at the very top of that BGSU chart.
• Reagan Williamson is hitting .315 on the year, with Peyton Dolejs and Sophie Weber batting .309 and .284, respectively.
• As a team, the Falcons lead the league in ERA (2.36) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.48), while ranking second in winning pct.
• Kent State is 18-27 on the season, and the Golden Flashes are 9-16 in the MAC. Madyson Cole has a team-leading .298 batting average, while Emily Lippe paces the Flashes with nine homers and 27 RBI. In the circle, Jessica LeBeau and Andrea Scali have combined to start 37 of KSU's 45 games, and both have a sub-3.00 ERA (LeBeau 2.80, Scali 2.92).
• BGSU trails Kent State, 74-46-1, in the all-time series. The Flashes captured three of four games at Meserve Field last season (April 23-25, 2021). The teams split a regular season-ending doubleheader in BG's last trip to Kent, three years ago (May 4, 2019).
• Following the KSU series, the Falcons will head to Oxford for the MAC Tournament, which begins Thursday (May 12). The four-team, double-elimination tourney runs through next Saturday (May 14).
