Tennis Set To Begin 2022-23 Campaign At Spartan Invite
September 29, 2022 | Women's Tennis
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Bowling Green Falcons tennis program will begin the fall portion of the 2022-23 season at the Spartan Invite, hosted by Michigan State. The invite begins on Friday, Sept. 30, and will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 2. All three days of competition are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET on the Michigan State Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Â
Spartan Invite Format
The invite will have a "Dynamic Duo" format, with each team competing with multiple duos. The partners will begin with a doubles match, then split for singles matches against the same opponent. The team that wins two or three of the matches will advance on the winner's side of each flight's bracket, with the other team resuming competition on the opposite side. Weather permitting, each duo will compete against three teams per day. In total, there are four flights that feature eight duos and one flight that features seven duos.
Â
Ioanna Tsadari and Hannah Neuman will be the top duo for Bowling Green, competing in the Izzo Flight of the 'B' round. Their doubles match starts at 9:00 a.m. BGSU's second pairing is Eloise Saraty and Lucy Furness, who will compete in the Spartan Dawgs Flight of the 'D' round. They begin their doubles match at noon. Maru Poppe will also compete in the Spartans Dawgs 'D' Flight with Youngstown State's Jessica Stanmore. Their competitions start at 11:30 a.m. Draws from each bracket are subject to change.
Â
The Falcons are one of 11 teams competing in the Spartan Invite. Joining BGSU are fellow MAC schools Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. The other schools competing are Michigan State, Chicago State, DePaul, Marquette, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oakland, and Youngstown State.
Â
Breaking Down Bowling Green
Bowling Green returns three letter-winners from last year's roster, including First Team All-MAC selection Ioanna Tsadari. The senior has 58 career wins, including 30 in singles play. Also returning is junior Hannah Neuman, who was named to the MAC Doubles Team of the Week two times last season. The third returner is Maru Poppe, who enters her sophomore campaign after winning six singles matches and six doubles matches last year.
Â
The Falcons added two transfers in the offseason. Lucy Furness joins the Orange and Brown after two seasons at Stephen F. Austin, where she earned Southland Conference Third Team Singles honors in 2021. Last season, she was named to the Spring 2022 All-WAC Academic Team. The other transfer is Eloise Saraty, a senior who played three seasons at Liberty. She was named VaSID All-State doubles second team in 2021 and has won 63 total matches. Saraty was also a three-time ASUN Academic Honor Roll selection.

Coach Bonnell's Outlook
"We're super excited to get into the invitational at Michigan State and see how the players handle the pressure of being up against players in different uniforms. Practice is one thing, but competition sometimes changes the pressure. I'm eager to see how we handle those situations."
Â
Up Next
The Falcons have nearly a month off before competing in the ITA Midwest Regionals. Regionals will be held at the University of Michigan from Thursday, Oct. 20 to Monday, Oct. 24.
