November 14, 2023 | Volleyball
BGSU, Miami (OH) Set For 6 p.m. Start
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will conclude the 2023 regular season Wednesday night (Nov. 15) against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. The Falcons will host the RedHawks for a 6 p.m. start at the Stroh Center for the regular season finale.
The Falcons clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament over the weekend with a pair of wins over Buffalo and will now await their seeding and opponent for the first round. The Orange and Brown are currently in the midst of a four-match win streak and have won nine of their last 10 meetings, including recording seven 3-0 sweeps over the stretch. Entering the final match of the regular season, the Falcons could still be the No. 5 seed in the tournament..
Matching Up Against Miami
The Miami (OH) RedHawks are entering the final match of an era. Head Coach Carolyn Condit, who has been with Miami for 40 seasons, will be coaching her last match on Wednesday (Nov. 15) after announcing her retirement following the season. The RedHawks enter with all five of their wins coming on the road this season, but have lost nine straight. The last win for Miami came on Oct. 14 with a 3-1 final over Kent State. During the nine-match losing streak, they've lost by a 3-0 score in seven of the matches, winning just three sets over the stretch.
Scouting Miami (OH)
Miami currently has six players with at least 100 kills, being led by sophomore outside hitter Ellie Hanson with 301. Hanson also leads the team in aces with 31. On the defensive side, it's a similar story with five RedHawks logging 100+ digs this season. Topping the list is, once again, Hanson with 294. As for blocks, sophomore middle Gentry Warrick paces the team with 96 total blocks.
All-Time Against The RedHawks
In the all-time series between Bowling Green and Miami (OH), the edge goes to the RedHawks with a record of 51-41 over the 92 meetings. However, when the Falcons host, they have the advantage with a 22-19 standing. BGSU has won nine straight against Miami, including a 3-0 win earlier this season on Oct. 17, the Falcons' fourth 3-0 win in the last five matches. The Orange and Brown have also tallied seven straight wins when hosting Miami.
Hovey Continues Quest Through Record Book
So far this season, Lauryn Hovey has landed 48 aces for the Falcons to lead the team. The total for Hovey has earned her spot in the Bowling Green record book, placing her fifth all-time for aces in a season. The next step for Hovey is Holly Costein's 1990 total of 51 followed by Costein in 1992 with 54 and Linda Popovich in 1986 with 55. The record is held by Jessica Andrasko with 79 in 1993.
Defense Playing Key Role
While the attack has been key for the Falcons recently, defense at the net has been just as important. On the season, Bowling Green holds a record of 14-2 when holding their opponent to a hitting percentage below .200 while being 2-10 when letting their opponent hit above that mark. Of the two wins when allowing a team to hit above .200, one came in the second BGSU win over Akron with the Zips hitting .223. The other came against Northern Kentucky in the opening weekend at .215.
Hitting Stride In November
November has been a strong month for the Falcons in recent history. After starting the month off with four straight wins, Bowling Green has now won 11 straight matches in the month of November after going 7-0 last season during the month. Going back to the 2019 season, the Orange and Brown are now 22-5 in November. The 2020-21 COVID season didn't play in the month due to a January-April schedule.
MAC Tournament Outlook
Heading into the MAC Tournament, the Falcons have their spot sealed, but their seed and opponent are yet to be determined. Currently the sixth seed, a BGSU win and Toledo loss Wednesday would push the Falcons up to the fifth seed. The second through fourth seeds are also undecided between Ball State (13-4), Ohio (12-5) and Buffalo (12-5), which will determine the first round opponent for the Falcons.
