Bobcats Stop Falcons on Sunday
March 26, 2023 | Softball
'Cats take twinbill at Meserve despite Williamson homer in opener, gritty effort by Davies in nightcap
The Bobcats completed the sweep after capturing the first game of the twinbill by a 13-4 score.
Makailah Dees and Peyton Dolejs each went 2-for-3 for the Falcons (8-18,1-5 MAC) in Sunday's opener, while Reagan Williamson clubbed a two-run homer.
In the nightcap, Hannah Davies pitched much better than the final score would indicate. Davies allowed just one run and three hits in the first six innings, before the Bobcats (13-14, 4-2 MAC) scored five times – aided by an error – in the seventh.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• Six Falcons – freshmen Delaney Davis, Marti Henkel, Hannah Hunt and Katie Hutter, along with Madison Lenig and Scarlet Anderson – each made their Meserve Field debut on Friday.  Three more Falcons joined them on Sunday.
• Ashley Chevalier was in the starting lineup in Sunday's first game, while fellow freshmen Mackenna Fry and Mackenzie Krafcik came off the bench to see action in the opener.
GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons took an early lead in Sunday's first game. Makailah Dees singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the first, and after Dees took second on a failed pickoff attempt with one out, Peyton Dolejs singled through the right side of the infield to plate the game's first run.
• Dolejs, who had taken second on the throw to the plate after her single, moved to third on a grounder, then scored on a wild pitch.
• But, the Bobcats got back-to-back homers from Reagan Farmer and Shelby Westler in the second inning, and Cici Keidel doubled and scored on a grounder to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.
• Then, Ohio broke the game open with a seven-run third. Annalia Paoli tripled and scored on a sac fly for the inning's first run, and Westler's second homer, a three-run shot, made it a 7-2 game. Later in the inning, Yasmine Logan hit a three-run homer of her own.
• Neither team scored until the 'Cats plated three more runs in the fifth. Three singles loaded the bases, before Paoli cleared them with a double to right-center.
• The bottom of the fifth saw Dolejs single, before Reagan Williamson drilled a homer down the left-field line. But, Ohio pitcher Keegan Moore retired the next two hitters to close out the win.
• Westler led the visitors with the two homers and four RBI, while four of her teammates also had two hits. The Bobcats had nine extra-base hits.
• For the Falcons, Dees and Dolejs each went 2-for-3. Dees scored a run, while Dolejs scored twice and drove in a run. Williamson had the two-run homer and also walked in three trips, while Ashley Chevalier had a base hit.

GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The second game was a low-scoring affair, as Hannah Davies and Ohio's Skipp Miller each pitched very well. Davies allowed just a first-inning double over the first two frames, with four strikeouts in that time.
• Miller walked Sophie Weber in the first inning and Ally Bezjak in the second, but both free passes came with two outs, and the Bobcat hurler was able to retire the next hitter in each case.
• In the third inning, the Bobcats got back-to-back hits by CiCi Keidel and Tori O'Brien to begin the inning. O'Brien tripled to score Keidel, but with O'Brien standing on third base,Davies retired the next three batters. She got Bell Hummel to hit a ground ball to Wynnie Reid at short, and Reid looked the runner back before firing to first. Yasmine Logan hit the first pitch she saw for a foul pop to Bezjak at first base, and the very next pitch saw Annalia Paoli hit a fly ball to Dolejs in left.
• Miller no-hit the Falcons through three-plus innings, before Maycee Godbolt and Hannah Hunt had back-to-back singles with two outs in the fourth. Bezjak battled Miller through a nine-pitch at-bat before Miller got a grounder that ended the inning.
• Davies retired 12 batters in a row from the third through sixth innings. Meanwhile, the Falcons tied the game in the sixth. Sophie Weber fouled off three-straight pitches before lacing a single to left on the ninth pitch of her at-bat. Reagan Williamson's ground ball sent pinch-runner Delaney Davis to second, and with two outs, a hot shot off the bat of Maycee Godbolt was misplayed by the Ohio shortstop, allowing Godbolt to reach base and Davis to score the tying run.
• Marti Henkel followed with a pinch-hit single, and Bezjak followed with a base hit, but an out on the basepaths ended the threat.
• Emma Hoffner doubled to lead off the seventh, snapping Davies's streak of 12 consecutive batters retired. Pinch-runner Lauren Yuhas moved to third on a sac bunt, and one batter later, Westler's two-run base hit gave the Bobcats the lead.
• The visitors would extend the lead to five on three more hits. Three of the runs were unearned due to an error during the inning.
• Miller allowed a Katie Hutter single with one out in the Falcon seventh, but struck out the next batter before a line drive to center ended the game.
• Davies allowed three earned runs and eight hits in her complete-game effort. She surrendered just one run and three hits in the first six frames. In the outing, she struck out five and did not walk a batter.
• Keidel and O'Brien each had two hits for the visitors, who had an 8-5 advantage in that department. Five different Falcons had one hit apiece.
