RedHawks Outlast Falcons in Fierce Friday Battle

Tsadari and Furness win in singles and doubles as BGSU falls short on the road
HAMILTON, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons (6-10, 0-4 MAC) dropped a competitive weekend opener to the Miami (OH) RedHawks (9-9, 3-1 MAC) by a score of 4-3. Ioanna Tsadari and Lucy Furness both won their singles and doubles matches to pace the Orange and Brown. Three of the singles matches needed a third set to determine the winner, with five singles sets needing a tiebreak. Additionally, the decisive doubles match needed a tiebreaker.
The Falcons started the day taking the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Lucy Furness and Hannah Neuman were the first duo to finish, swiftly taking a 6-1 win at No. 2. Miami took the No. 3 match while Ioanna Tsadari and Eloise Saraty faced a 5-2 deficit at No. 1. The seniors stormed back to tie it a 5-5, then outlasted Laura Rico and Catherine Denysiewicz-Slowek for a 7-6 triumph. This was the first time this season BGSU earned the doubles point in MAC play.
Tsadari and Saraty are a team-best 7-3 in doubles this spring, playing all matches at No. 1. Both players have 12 total doubles wins this season, tied for the team lead. Today's win also marked Tsadari's 40th doubles victory at BGSU. Furness and Neuman have an 8-7 doubles record this spring, including a 7-4 mark at No. 2. This was Neuman's 30th career doubles victory as a Falcon, ranking second on the team. Both duos have eight wins apiece during the 2022-23 season.
In singles, the RedHawks took the first three matches to gain a 3-1 lead. The next three matches all needed a tiebreak set, starting with Ioanna Tsadari's win at No. 2. The senior dropped her first set, 1-6, but rebounded to take the next two sets, 6-4 and 7-5. After they each dropped their opening set, 6-7, Lucy Furness and Leticia Fonseca came out on the winning end of a close second set, both taking a 7-6 battle to force yet another tiebreak. Furness tallied a 6-3 win at No. 3, but Fonseca was defeated 6-2 at No. 6 as the hosts escaped with a win.
Tsadari's singles win was her fifth of the spring and eighth of the 2022-23 campaign. She has 20 total victories this season, ranking second on the team. She has 77 total career victories in her time at BGSU, the most on the team. Furness secured her 11th singles win of the 2022-23 season, with today's marking her sixth of the spring. Her season total is tied with Saraty for the most on the team. She has 19 total triumphs this year, placing her third on the team.
