RedHawks Take Tuesday's Series Opener
April 11, 2023 | Softball
BGSU will face the defending MAC champions in a Wednesday twinbill
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Miami scored seven times over the last three innings to take control on Tuesday (April 11), as the RedHawks downed the Bowling Green State University softball team, 9-0, at Meserve Field.
Karli Spaid homered twice for the RedHawks (21-14, 9-6 Mid-American Conference), driving in five runs. Â Miami scored a pair of third-inning runs to take the lead, and after RedHawk pitcher Brianna Pratt got out of jams in both the first and third innings, she retired the last 14 Falcons she faced.
Hannah Davies posted yet another gritty performance in the circle for the Orange and Brown (8-25, 1-12 MAC), allowing four runs in five innings before the RedHawks pulled away late.
BGSU-MIAMI – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Hannah Davies kept the RedHawks off of the scoreboard in the first two innings, getting the third out with multiple runners on base in each case. In the first, after a bloop double, a two-out walk and a stolen base put runners on second and third, Davies got Riley Coyne to hit a foul pop that was gloved by first baseman Maycee Godbolt.
• BGSU also got runners to second and third in the opening inning, as Wynnie Reid reached on a one-out error before Marti Henkel drew a walk. A ground ball moved the runners up 60 feet each, but MU starter Brianna Pratt got a strikeout to end the inning.
• In the second, a two-out bunt single was followed by a walk to load the bases for Miami, but Davies induced a harmless grounder off the bat of Chloe Parks. The ball rolled to Godbolt, who stepped on the first-base bag to retire the side.
• But, in the third inning, Karli Spaid led off with a homer to center. After a Kate Kobayashi walk, Holly Blaska singled, and the RedHawks took advantage of a rundown to score a second run in the inning.
• The Falcons got runners to second and third for the second time in three innings, as Delaney Davis singled with one out in the third, before taking second on a Reid fielder's choice as both runners reached safely. A ground ball enabled the runners to move up, but another ground ball retired the side.
• Davies retired the side in order in the fourth frame, but Spaid drew a walk to begin the fifth. The BG pitcher struck out Kobayashi and got Coyne to hit a fly ball to left that Makailah Dees grabbed in foul territory. But, hits by Blaska and Jenna Golembiewski each scored a run to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
• In the sixth, Miami added a run against Mackenzie Krafcik on an Allie Cummins walk and stolen base and a Spaid base hit. The RedHawks would load the bases before Krafcik struck out Blaska to end the half inning.
• But, the RedHawks would add four runs in the seventh to break the game open. The big blow in that inning was a three-run homer by Spaid, her second dinger of the game. Pratt retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning.
