BGSU to meet the Zips in a Saturday twinbill, Sunday single game

SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team hits the road for a weekend series vs. the University of Akron. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons will meet the Zips in a three-game series, beginning with a Saturday (April 15) doubleheader. First pitch of the first game is set for 1:00 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field.
• Then, the teams will wrap up the three-game series with a Sunday (April 16) contest, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

• Both of Saturday's games are scheduled to be streamed by ESPN+, while Sunday's contest will be streamed via the Zips Digital Network.

FUN FALCON FACTS
• Fenton-Bockbrader and assistant coaches Erinn Gankosky and Jacob Jeffries welcomed back 13 returning letterwinners from last year's club. The 2022 Falcons went 34-21 (.618) overall and 16-11 (.593) in MAC play, good for fourth place in the 11-team league.
• Sophie Weber leads the 2023 Falcons at the plate, with a .327 batting average to date. Weber also leads the Falcons with 32 hits, nine doubles, three homers, 15 RBI, 50 total bases and a .510 slugging pct.
• Katie Hutter and Delaney Davis are hitting .279 and .277, respectively, with Marti Henkel batting .265. Davis paces the Falcons with seven stolen bases, 16 runs scored and an on-base pct. of .397.
• Maycee Godbolt and Wynnie Reid are batting .247 and .243, respectively, this spring. Godbolt is second on the team in doubles, with four, and third in RBI, with 12. Reid had three hits in the Miami series earlier this week.
• Peyton Dolejs has a BG-best eight multiple-hit games, while Weber has seven, Davis six and Makailah Dees five.
• Reid is hitting a team-leading .333 in MAC games, with Davis batting .296 and Henkel .273 against league foes.
• Hannah Davies has thrown a team-high 80 2/3 innings this year, and also leads BG pitchers in appearances (19), starts (12), complete games (four) and strikeouts (56). Davies, who started to of the three contests in the Miami series, has a 5.64 ERA this season to date.
• Sydney Stepp has an ERA of 5.80, while Scarlet Anderson has a team-best five wins and a 6.67 ERA. Anderson is second on the team with 17 appearances, and she and Stepp each have made nine starts in the circle for the Orange and Brown.
THE OPPONENT / THE SERIES
• Akron brings an overall record of 22-15 into the weekend, and the Zips are 10-7 in MAC play. UA swept a three-game series at Buffalo in midweek #MACtion, winning by scores of 4-1 on Tuesday and 9-4 and 5-1 on Wednesday. The Zips enter Saturday's game on a five-game winning streak. Individually, Brooke Sivek is hitting a team-high .331, and also leads the Zips with 15 stolen bases and 28 runs scored. In the circle, Haley Croyle and Alexi DiFeo have combined to start 31 of UA's 37 games to date. Croyle is 9-6 with a 2.27 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 108 innings. DiFeo has a record of 8-5 and a 2.88 ERA, with 79 strikeouts. Craig Nicholson is in his first season as head coach of the Zips, who went 18-32 overall and 13-16 in the conference in 2022.
• The Falcons lead Akron, 63-30-1, in the all-time series. BGSU captured two of last season's three meetings at Meserve Field, with 3-2 and 9-0 wins sandwiched around a 5-2 UA victory. The last nine series meetings all have taken place at Meserve, as BG has not played in Akron since swept a three-game set from the Zips in 2018.
