Falcons Venture to MAC's "West Coast" for Weekend Series at NIU

BGSU ends the 2023 season with three games vs. the Huskies in DeKalb

SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team hits the road this weekend, heading to the Mid-American Conference's "West Coast" for a three-game series vs. Northern Illinois University. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons will open the series with the Huskies on Friday (May 5), with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. ET at Mary M. Bell Field.
• Then, the teams will meet in a Saturday (May 6) doubleheader, with the first pitch of the first game set for 2:00 p.m. ET.

FUN FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons recognized their seniors prior to Saturday's (April 29) opener vs. Kent State at Meserve Field. Six members of the program were honored in pregame ceremonies. That group included Ally Bezjak, Hannah Davies, Greta L'Esperance, Madison Lenig, Sydney Stepp and Sophie Weber.
• The Falcons pounded out 13 hits in the second game of that day's doubleheader vs. the Golden Flashes. Hannah Hunt had a pair of multiple-hit games that day, going 2-for-2 with a walk in the opener and 2-for-4 with a three-run double in the nightcap. She raised her season batting average nearly 40 points on the afternoon.
• Delaney Davis and Reagan Williamson each had three hits in game two. Williamson had an RBI in the opener before going 3-for-4 with a walk in the second contest.
• Williamson continued her hot hitting on Sunday (April 30), going 2-for-3 with a double. Williamson hit .600 in the Kent State series, as she was 6-for-10 with a walk against Golden Flash pitching.
• In the final home game of her Falcon career, Bezjak was 1-for-2 with a walk.
• Mackenzie Krafcik threw six and two-thirds innings in relief in the final game of the weekend.
• On the season, Weber leads the Falcons at the plate, with a .305 batting average to date. She also leads the Falcons in hits (40), doubles (10), homers (three), runs batted in (18), total bases (61) and slugging percentage (.466).
• Williamson is batting .255, with Wynnie Reid and Peyton Dolejs hitting .247 and .241, respectively. Williamson has a team-leading 19 walks, and also paces the club in on-base pct. (.369).
• Dolejs leads the Falcons with 21 runs scored, along with at-bats (137) and triples (four). She is second on the club in hits (33), extra-base hits (nine), total bases (48) and and RBI (13 - tied for second). Dolejs and Weber are the only two Falcons to have seen action in all 47 games this season.
• Dolejs has a BG-best 10 multiple-hit games, while Weber has nine, Davis seven and Makailah Dees five. Reid is hitting a team-leading .298 in MAC games to date.
• In the circle, Davies has thrown a team-high 105 2/3 innings this year, and also leads BG pitchers in appearances (26), starts (18), complete games (six) and strikeouts (74). Davies has a 6.05 ERA this season.
• Madi Young, Krafcik and Stepp each have an ERA between 6.22 and 6.79. while Scarlet Anderson has a team-best five wins and a 7.37 ERA. Anderson is second on the team with 19 appearances in the circle, Krafcik and Stepp have appeared in 18 and 17 contests, respectively. Stepp has made 12 starts and Anderson 10 for the Orange and Brown. Krafcik has made a team-high 15 relief appearances.
THE OPPONENT / THE SERIES
• Northern Illinois brings an overall record of 24-24 into the weekend, and the Huskies are sixth in the MAC with a 13-12 conference record. NIU captured two of three games at Buffalo last weekend, with a 6-2 victory in Sunday's contest. Kelly Walinski is hitting .362, with Caitlyn Shumaker batting .303 on the season. Three of their teammates are batting between .287 and .296. In the circle, four Huskies have made 20 or more appearances. Danielle Stewart leads the team in appearances, starts, wins, complete games and ERA. She is 11-10 with eight complete games and an ERA of 3.19. Lily Cassell and Emily Dato have ERAs of 4.04 and 4.58, respectively. Head coach Christina Sutcliffe and her staff welcomed 11 newcomers this season, along with 13 returnees from last year's team that went 17-28 overall and 10-18 in the MAC.
• The Falcons trail Northern Illinois, 31-28, in the all-time series, and NIU won two of last season's three games, with 1-0 and 5-3 wins on the opening day of the 2022 MAC season at Meserve Field (March 18, 2022). BGSU bounced back with a 7-3 win two days later. BGSU's last trip to DeKalb saw the Falcons win three of four games in a weekend series almost exactly two years ago (May 7-8, 2021). Prior to that 2021 series, the Falcons and Huskies had not met since 2017.
