September 26, 2023 | Volleyball
KALAMAZOO, MICH. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will begin the road portion of their Mid-American Conference schedule this weekend, traveling to face the Western Michigan Broncos in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Falcons and Broncos are scheduled for matches on Thursday (Sept. 28) and Friday (Sept. 29), both scheduled for 6 p.m. first serves.
Over the last three seasons, the Falcons have posted a combined 25-4 record on the road against MAC opponents, including 7-2 showings each of the last two seasons and an 11-0 record during the 2020-21 campaign. The Falcons will once again play nine road contests within the MAC this season, also traveling to face Ohio, Miami (OH), Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Akron.
Scouting Western Michigan
The Western Michigan Broncos will enter the matches against the Falcons with a strong 12-2 record on the season while standing 2-0 in the MAC. WMU opened MAC play with a pair of 3-0 wins over Miami (OH). As for the non-conference season, the Broncos picked up notable wins over Michigan (3-0) and Wake Forest (3-1) while only losing to Mississippi State (3-2) and Western Kentucky (3-1). Western Michigan is led by senior setter Logan Case who picked up MAC West Setter of the Week honors each of the first four weeks of the season and surpassed 4,000 career assists.
The all-time series between Bowling Green and Western Michigan has swayed to the side of the Broncos, but lately it has been the Falcons on the winning side. WMU holds the advantage all-time with a 39-28 record over BGSU, but the Falcons have won six straight against Western Michigan as well as nine of the last 10 meetings, dating back to the start of the 2016 season. Last year's meeting, also in Kalamazoo, was a five-set win for the Falcons.
Closing In On Win 200
Head coach Danijela Tomic is closing in on a milestone win with the Falcons. Now in her 12th season with the Orange and Brown, Tomic enters the weekend against Western Michigan with 199 wins at the helm of BGSU Volleyball, standing just one win away from 200. Of those 200, 129 have come in conference play. During her 19 seasons as a head coach at the Division I level, Tomic has recorded 358 victories.
Ace Up The Sleeve
Against NIU, the Falcons landed a total of 20 aces, registering 11 in the first match and nine in the second. The total tied for the most in the MAC during the opening weekend of conference play with Buffalo. For the season, Lauryn Hovey leads the team with 23, tied for the sixth-most in the MAC. Hovey's six aces against NIU were tied for the most in the conference for the weekend. Alexis Mettille and Lindsey LaPinta both tied for fourth in the MAC for the weekend with five each.
Efficient On The Attack
In the second match against Northern Illinois, the Falcons recorded a .304 hitting percentage, the best mark by the team this season. The outing marked the second time this season BGSU hit .300 or higher, joining the match against Baylor when the team logged a .302 hitting percentage. Against NIU the Orange and Brown also landed a season-high 66 kills, the first time this season surpassing the 60-kill mark.
Keeping The BGSU Block Party Going
The Falcons have registered at least eight blocks in each of the last five matches, including a season-high 15 against Michigan followed by 14 against Northern Illinois. Over the last five matches, the Falcons are averaging 10.8 blocks per match.
