Hovey Lands 500th Collegiate Kill As Bowling Green Falls To WMU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team began their weekend series against Western Michigan on Thursday (Sept. 28) in Kalamazoo. For the Falcons, Lauryn Hovey landed four kills in the first set, finishing with eight, to hit 500 career kills in the Orange and Brown. However, early deficits in the first and third sets proved to be the difference as Western Michigan captured a 3-0 final over the Falcons.

How It Happened
Set 1: Western Michigan 25, Bowling Green 21
- Western Michigan jumped out to an early lead, tallying the first five points of the match to force a quick BGSU timeout with the Falcons trailing 5-0.
- The Orange and Brown recorded their first point of the match out of the timeout, registering three of the next four points to cut into the WMU lead, 6-3.
- The two teams traded points before the Falcons were able to string together a 3-0 run to bring the score to 11-9 WMU.
- Western Michigan soon responded with a 3-0 run of their own to push their lead to 16-11, but the Falcons continued to chip away, using a 5-1 stretch to make it an 18-17 WMU lead, cutting the deficit to just one.
- The Broncos went on a 3-1 spurt to increase their lead back to three at 21-18, prompting the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- Western Michigan was able to close out the set for a 25-21 score to go up 1-0 for the match.
Set 2: Western Michigan 25, Bowling Green 21
- The Falcons opened the second set with a 3-0 run that included a kill from Jessica Andrews and a pair from Mia Tyler. However, Western Michigan responded with a 6-0 run to move in front 6-3 with Bowling Green using a timeout.
- WMU landed the first point out of the timeout to bring their run to 7-0, but the Falcons were able to start a run of their own right after. A 3-0 burst for BGSU cut the Western lead down to 7-6.
- The Orange and Brown continued to chip away at the lead before another 3-0 run tied the set at 10-10.
- Western Michigan reclaimed their lead at 12-10, but a 3-0 run for the Falcons swung the score back to their favor at 13-12.
- The runs continued through the set with the next being a 4-0 stretch for the Broncos to take a 17-14 lead.
- The Broncos were able to maintain their advantage through the end of the set, taking a 25-21 score.
Set 3: Western Michigan 25, Bowling Green 19
- The third set started the same as the first with WMU opening up with a 5-0 run to force an early BGSU timeout.
- Western Michigan continued to add to their lead before another 3-0 run pushed the advantage to 15-6 with the Falcons calling their second timeout.
- Later in the set, the Falcons tallied a 6-1 stretch, that included a pair of 3-0 runs interrupted by one WMU point, to trim the Western lead to 22-18.
- The late surge wasn't enough for the Falcons as WMU took the set 25-19 for the 3-0 final.

- Lauryn Hovey landed four kills in the first set for the Falcons, bringing her career kills total to 500 in the Orange and Brown. Hovey finished with eight kills and added a season-high eight assists.
- Amanda Otten led the Falcons in assists with 21. So far during her freshman campaign, Otten has eclipsed 20 assists five times.
