Bowling Green Concludes Series Against Western Michigan Friday Night

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team concluded the series against the Western Michigan Broncos Friday night (Sept. 29) in Kalamazoo. The Falcons and Broncos played three close sets, trading ties and leads throughout the match, but it was the Broncos who came out on top with a 3-0 final over the Orange and Brown. The Falcons will now shift attention to a pair of home matches next weekend, hosting the Battle of I-75 on Friday (Oct. 6) and Ball State on Saturday (Oct. 7).

How It Happened
Set 1: Western Michigan 25, Bowling Green 22
- The match started with the Falcons landing the first point before the two teams traded points with ties at 2-2 and 4-4. WMU created a slight gap, staying in front while going back-and-forth.
- The Broncos created an advantage with a 4-0 run to move out in front 13-8, forcing a BGSU timeout for the match's first stoppage.
- The Falcons were able to cut into the Western Michigan lead with a 5-0 run later in the set, drawing the score to 18-15.
- Bowling Green was able to string together another 3-0 run later in the set that pulled the Orange and Brown within one at 22-21.
- Western Michigan closed out the first set with a 25-22 score to go up 1-0 for the match.
Set 2: Western Michigan 25, Bowling Green 21
- The second set began with the teams trading points once again before a 4-0 run for the Falcons pushed BGSU out in front, 7-4, and resulted in the first Western Michigan timeout of the match.
- WMU tallied the first point out of the timeout before the Falcons landed two more to extend their run to 6-1 with a 9-5 advantage.
- The Broncos continued to chip away at the BGSU lead through the set before getting it down to a 17-16 Bowling Green lead, seeing the Falcons take a timeout.
- The Falcons responded with a pair of points out of the timeout to push the lead to 19-16.
- Western Michigan was able to tally a 3-0 run to move in front 21-20, prompting the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- WMU concluded the set with a 4-0 run for a 25-21 set score.
Set 3: Western Michigan 25, Bowling Green 23
- The Falcons opened the third set by recording four of the first five points to move in front 4-1. A 4-0 Western Michigan run soon followed to push the Broncos in front 6-5.
- Bowling Green recorded a 3-0 run later in the set to reclaim the lead at 11-9, but WMU fought back to tie it up at 13-13.
- The ties continued between the two teams at 14-14, 15-15 and 16-16 before a 3-0 run for the Broncos made it an 18-16 lead with BGSU taking a timeout.
- The Western Michigan lead stretched to 22-19 before the next stoppage, being the second Bowling Green timeout of the set.
- The Falcons quickly responded with a 3-0 run of their own, tying the set up at 23-23 to force a WMU timeout.
- Western Michigan recorded the next two points out of the timeout to take the set 25-23.

- Jessica Andrews posted a .389 hitting percentage for the Falcons, the best individual mark over the course of the weekend for the team when attempting at least 10 attacks. Andrews landed eight kills on 18 attacks, matching her career-high, with just one error.
- Gwen Crull recorded a career-high five kills for the Orange and Brown. Crull paired her kills with four block assists for a career-high seven points.
- For the second straight match, Lauryn Hovey tallied a season-high in the assists column, totaling 13, second on the team, in the match.
