Butler Led CMU In Three-Pointers Made In 2023-24; Started 26 Games
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball program and head coach Todd Simon announced the signing of Derrick Butler on Wednesday (May 15). Butler, a 6-foot-2 guard, will join the Falcons after spending the 2023-24 season in the MAC with Central Michigan. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Butler started the final 26 games of CMU's season and finished fourth in the MAC in 3-point field goal percentage.Â
"We are fortunate to add Derrick to the program," said Simon. "He's an established winner in the MAC and at every level he has played at. His ability score at all three levels along with his competitiveness will be major assets for us. Derrick's experience will help our pursuit of a MAC championship."
During the 2023-24 campaign, Butler led Central Michigan in three-pointers made with 52 while ranking third in the MAC for three-point percentage (41.6%). He appeared in 31 games and started the final 26 of Central Michigan's season. Butler averaged 10.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game and tallied four 20-point games. He registered five three-pointers in a game twice for the Chippewas, doing so against Western Michigan (Feb. 17) and Northern Illinois (March 5).Â
Butler played the 2022-23 season at Chipola Junior College, earning Second Team All-Conference honors. He played in 34 games with 29 starts, averaging 10.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Butler maintained a 42.1-percent mark from the floor and 37.9-percent from three while logging double-digits points 17 times and a pair of 20-point games. As for the 2021-22 campaign, Butler played for Eastern Florida State College, making three starts in 16 appearances. He averaged 10.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game with two 20-point games and eight double-digit performances.Â
Butler is the sixth player to sign with the Falcons this offseason, joining five transfers; Michigan forward Youssef Khayat, Arizona State guard Braelon Green, Northern Oklahoma guard Javontae Campbell, Wheeling forward Marcus Johnson and Utah guard Wilguens Jr. Exacte; and two incoming signees from the fall; guard Jaxon Pardon and forward Preston Squire.
