Ball State downs BG, 1-0, to snap Falcons' 13-match unbeaten streak

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – For the first time in more than two months, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team suffered a loss. The Falcons fell to Ball State University by a 1-0 score on Sunday (Oct. 19) at Cochrane Stadium.

The Falcons (8-2-6, 3-1-5 Mid-American Conference) had a 16-4 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 lead in the second half, but saw a school-record 13-match unbeaten streak come to an end.

Kate Pallante made six saves in goal for the Cardinals (9-5-2, 6-3-1 MAC). Addie Chester, the MAC's leading scorer, picked up her 10th goal of the season in the 34th minute of the match, finding herself alone in the 18-yard box after a BGSU defender slipped and fell, and one-timing a shot past sophomore Payton O'Malley.

Ellie Pool matched the Cardinals' team totals with four total shots including two shots on goal. Emma Stransky and Emme Butera each had three shot attempts on Sunday, while Haley Wolf put both of her shots on target. Chester had three of the Cards' four shots in the match.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons, as mentioned, see a school-record 13-match unbeaten streak come to an end. BGSU had been 7-0-6 since a 1-0 loss to Illinois just over two months ago (Aug. 17).

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Fifteen minutes into the match, Evie Underhill deflected a Ball State clearing attempt in the Cardinals' defensive zone. The ball went directly to Emme Butera, who quickly fired a shot from distance that went just wide of the right goalpost.
• Midway through the half, the visitors thought they had gotten on the scoreboard. Jordyn Klaasen's flick-on of a free kick by Fiona Killian found Addie Chester near the right goalpost, and Chester headed the ball into the net, but the assistant referee's flag was raised as offside was called on the Cards.
• Several minutes later, junior Taylor Green checked into the match. Green, making her first appearance since suffering an injury late in the first half of the Western Michigan game on Sept. 21, played the final 66 minutes of Sunday's contest.
• Seventeen minutes remained before halftime when Butera played a pass to Audrey Oliver in the middle of the field. Oliver put a pass forward to Ellie Pool, who was racing down the left side with a BSU defender matching her stride for stride. Pool reached the ball first, however, and put a one-time effort on frame, but Kate Pallante was able to make the save.
• With just over 11 minutes left before halftime, Ball State got on the board. A BGSU defender, being pressed by Chester, slipped and fell. Chester ran onto the ball and made no mistake, quickly firing a shot into the net for what would prove to be the winning goal.
• Late in the first half, sophomore Haley Wolf put a pair of shots on goal. The first came after a nifty passing sequence that involved Butera, Oliver, Isabella Mazzaferro and Pool, but Pallante made the save on Wolf's shot.
• Then, with 30 seconds left before halftime, a right-side cross by Jayna Searles was knocked back to Wolf, who again put a shot on target, but Pallante was able to make the stop.
• Five minutes into the second half, Gabby Lamparty played a ball ahead to Emma Stransky. Stransky worked her way past no fewer than four Cardinals, but her shot was stopped.
• Just over a minute later, Emma Kane made a run into the box before being challenged by a defender. The ball caromed to Pool, who put another ball on frame, but Pallante made the save.
• With under eight minutes left in the match, the Falcons peppered the BSU defense with shot after shot. Stransky, Kane and Pool all hit shots in the 18-yard box, but all three were blocked. Butera also had a shot to end that sequence, but her effort went just wide.
• The Falcons had a 10-2 lead in shot attempts in the second half.

UP NEXT
• The Falcons head to Western New York for a Thursday (Oct. 23) meeting with Buffalo. BGSU battles the Bulls in a 6:00 p.m. start at UB Stadium.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will close the home portion of the schedule next Sunday (Oct. 26), taking on Akron in a 1:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Stadium. Admission is free, and it will be Senior Day for the BGSU women's soccer program.
