BGSU posts second-straight shutout, fifth of season
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team posted a second-straight shutout, as the Falcons battled the University of Toledo to a scoreless draw on Thursday night (Oct. 2). The Mid-American Conference matchup was held at Paul Hotmer Field.
Sophomore Payton O'Malley made three saves for the Falcons (7-1-4, 2-0-3 MAC), while Agnes Stenlund had one stop for the host Rockets (3-3-5, 0-2-3 MAC).
The teams combined for just eight total shots and four shots on goal over the 90 minutes.
BGSU's unbeaten streak increases to 10 matches, tied for the second-longest streak in program history.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons are now 7-1-4 (.750) on the season, continuing the best start in program history.
• Prior to this season, the best winning percentage through 12 games in program history was .667, set in 2001 (7-3-2) and matched in 2018. The 2018 club also started with a 7-3-2 mark.
• The 2025 season is the 29th in the history of the program, which began in 1997.
ALSO NOTEWORTHY
• The Falcons are now 6-0-4 in the last 10 matches, since BGSU's lone loss of the season (1-0 vs. Illinois on Aug. 17). BG's current unbeaten streak is tied for the second longest in school history.
• The school record is an 11-match unbeaten streak (9-0-2) by the 2005 team. The 2018 Falcons also had a 10-match unbeaten streak (9-0-1).
• Both the 2005 and '18 clubs each went on to win MAC championships.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team had a shot attempt for over 26 minutes to start the match. The first shot of the night came from freshman Quinn O'Neil soon after she checked into the match. She ran onto a forward pass as she headed into the 18-yard box, and fired a shot from near the right post, but it was blocked by a Rocket defender.
• With 12 minutes left in the half, UT's Gabby Anulare got her head on a corner kick and put a hard shot on frame, but sophomore Payton O'Malley was in perfect position to make the save.
• One of BGSU's best chances of the night came with under 10 minutes left before the break. A Falcon cross bounced around in the penalty area, and a BG shot/pass was finally blocked out of the box. But, it went toward the onrushing Emme Butera and, from well outside the 18-yard box, the junior hit arguably the hardest shot of the night for either team. The blast glanced off the top of the crossbar and went out of play.
• Five minutes later, junior Lizzie Bultynck possessed the ball on the right side of the penalty area and attempted to slide a pass to Ellie Pool in the center of the box. But, UT 'keeper Agnes Stenlund was able to dive and grab the pass before it could reach Pool.
• Midway through the second half, Minah Syam played O'Neil down the right side of the field, and the freshman found sophomore Lauren Mahoney with a pass. Mahoney got the ball to Bultynck just outside the 18-yard line, and Bultynck fired a shot on goal, but Stenlund was able to make the stop.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons take to the road again on Sunday (Oct. 5), heading to Ypsilanti to face Eastern Michigan University. First touch is set for 1:00 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will be idle until the following Sunday (Oct. 12), when Miami University comes to Cochrane Stadium. That match also begins at 1:00 p.m., and admission is free.
