Terry scores his 10th, Ball makes career-high 9 stops
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team closed the home portion of the 2025 schedule on Friday night (Oct. 31), battling UIC to a 1-1 draw in Missouri Valley Conference action at Cochrane Stadium.
Senior Trace Terry scored a second-half goal for the Falcons (5-7-4, 1-3-2 MVC), giving BGSU the lead just seven minutes after halftime. But, Adrian Biaggi equalized for the Flames (8-2-5, 1-1-4 MVC) with just over 20 minutes to go.
Redshirt sophomore Jason Ball made nine saves, the highest total of his young career.
In an entertaining, back-and-forth match, the Flames had 22 total shots to the Falcons' 10, but BGSU generated a plethora of dangerous chances at the offensive end as well. Terry and junior Bennett Painter combined to fire three shots that were blocked by UIC defenders on the goal line, while junior Anthony Hernandez hit the post with a second-half shot.
Eduardo Nys, who entered the match as the nation's leader in shots and shots on goal, certainly did nothing to diminish his standing on those lists. Nys fired eight of UIC's 22 shots, putting four on frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons very nearly took the lead less than two minutes in. Trace Terry blocked a clearing attempt by a UIC defender, and the ball went to Bennett Painter. Painter took one touch and fired a shot that was blocked by Flames defender Jacobo Cruz on the goal line. Terry slid and hit a follow-up shot on frame, but Cruz blocked that effort with a diving header, somehow keeping the game scoreless.
• BGSU had an early chance in the second half as well, as Ryko Bodurov made a run down the center of the field with several UIC players hounding him. The BG sophomore hit a curving shot from outside the 18-yard box that forced Owen Cornell into an acrobatic save. That was the only save of the night for Cornell, who tipped that shot over the bar just 20 seconds after halftime.
• The Falcons got on the board just over seven minutes into the half. Joshua Saavedra won the ball on the right side of the penalty area, and slid a pass out to Anthony Hernandez, who was at the edge of the box. Hernandez played a short cross into the box, and Terry was at the near post to head the ball home.
• Just over two minutes later, Cornell slipped when attempting to play a long ball forward, and Hernandez quickly hit a shot from approximately 30 yards out, but the effort caromed off of the right goalpost and bounced away.
• A little over an hour into the match, a shot by UIC's Rui Reis was headed toward the far post, but was deflected toward the near post by a defender. But, the ball wound up going several feet wide.
• Midway through the half, Painter stole the ball near midfield and headed toward goal. But, Cornell was able to thwart the breakaway attempt, coming off of his line to grab the ball as Painter attempted to round the 'keeper.
• The visitors knotted the score in the 70th minute. Off of a scramble in the box, Darrell Turcios won a challenge and poked the ball to Adrian Biaggi on the left side of the six-yard box. Biaggi cut back to his right to elude a defender, then fired a shot inside the far post.
• Some nifty passing by the Flames resulted in a hard shot by Sebastian Khoury just over two minutes after the goal, but Ball made a nice save on the play.
• The Flames came up with yet another 'team save' with just one minute to go. Andrew Shaffer took a BGSU corner kick, hitting it into the six-yard box. Painter, on the far side, headed the ball toward goal. The shot eluded the leaping effort of Cornell, but for the third time in the match, a UIC defender was on the goal line and blocked the ball away.
