Bowling Green Bests Buffalo For Key Win In MAC Tournament Hunt

Bozic, Otten Register Double-Doubles; Hernandez Lands Four Aces
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team claimed a four-set victory over the Buffalo Bulls Friday night (Nov. 14) on the road. The Falcons came out swinging with a .371 hitting percentage in the first set, rolling into a 25-22 score. Buffalo evened the match with a second set win, but the Falcons took over from there with 25-20 and 25-19 set scores to secure the 3-1 win. The win moves the Falcons to 15-14 on the season while being 9-8 within the MAC. With results from around the MAC Friday night, three of the six spots in the MAC Tournament will be up for grabs on Saturday (Nov. 15) with the Falcons as one of four teams fighting for a spot.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Buffalo 22
- A kill from Avery Hobson began the match in favor of the Falcons. Two Bulls points began a back-and-forth. Another kill from Hobson answered, but Buffalo moved out to a 3-2 lead.
- The Falcons quickly responded with a 3-0 run, including back-to-back aces by Sydnie Hernandez, giving the Falcons a 5-3 advantage.
- The two traded points from there until consecutive kills from Hobson increased the Bowling Green edge to 10-7. The Falcons later added a 3-1 stretch to push the score to 15-11 at the media timeout.
- Coming out of the timeout, Bowling Green rattled off a 3-0 run to make it a 6-1 stretch and 18-11 lead, resulting in a timeout from Buffalo. BGSU added another tally after the timeout, making it a 7-1 stretch and 19-11 lead.
- Buffalo answered back with a 4-0 run to narrow the gap to 19-15 with Bowling Green taking their first timeout.
- Back-to-back points for Bowling Green after the timeout ended the Buffalo run, but the Bulls responded with a 4-0 run for a 21-19 score and the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- Buffalo added another point after the timeout, but the Falcons answered with two of their own to reclaim a 23-20 advantage with the Bulls taking their second timeout.
- The Bulls landed the first two points after the timeout, but the Falcons were able to land kills from Jessica Andrews and Anastasija Bozic to claim the set, 25-22.
Set 2: Buffalo 25, Bowling Green 20
- The second set began back-and-forth with Buffalo claiming the first multi-point lead at 5-3, rolling it into a 4-1 stretch to create a 7-4 lead.
- The Falcons used a pair of points to pull within one, 7-6, before the back-and-forth resumed. Buffalo worked to rebuild their lead, reaching 15-9 at the media timeout following a 4-0 run.
- Buffalo added a tally after the timeout, but the Falcons worked for a 3-1 stretch to cut into the lead, 17-12. A point from the Bulls made it 18-12 with a BGSU timeout.
- The Falcons registered another 3-1 stretch after the timeout to trim the deficit down to 19-15. The score moved to 21-16 with BGSU taking their second timeout of the set.
- Bowling Green tallied consecutive points after the timeout, including an ace from Hernandez, to cut the score to 21-18 with a Buffalo timeout.
- Buffalo registered the next two points after the timeout, but the Falcons answered in similar fashion to match the tallies. Two more Buffalo points ended the set, 25-20.
Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Buffalo 20
- Buffalo landed the first point of the set, but the Falcons answered with a 5-0 run, including a pair of aces from Avery Anders for a 5-1 advantage.
- The Bulls worked for a run of their own, reaching 3-0 to close the gap to 5-4 in the set. A kill from Andrews ended the run, keeping BGSU in front.
- The trading of runs continued with the Andrews kill sparking a 3-0 run for the Falcons, moving the score to 8-4. Buffalo landed a point, but another 3-0 BGSU run followed for a 6-1 stretch, building an 11-5 lead.
- Buffalo worked for a 4-1 stretch to narrow the score to 12-9 in the set. The Falcons tallied a point, but two more Bulls points followed for a 13-11 score. The two traded points from there to the media timeout with a 15-13 BGSU lead.
- A 3-1 stretch for Buffalo after the timeout tied the score up at 16-16. The Falcons answered with a 3-0 run, including an ace from Andrews, for a 19-16 lead and a timeout from Buffalo.
- Two points for the Bulls out of the timeout pulled them back within one, 19-18. Bowling Green fought back with a 3-0 run, reclaiming the advantage at 22-18 to force the second Buffalo timeout.
- After the timeout, the Falcons were able to maintain their lead for a 25-20 set score.
Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Buffalo 19
- Buffalo opened the set with a 4-1 stretch. The Falcons utilized a pair of points to pull within one, 4-3, before the teams started going back-and-forth.
- The Falcons ended the point trading with a 5-0 run, including an ace from Bozic, to move out to a 9-6 lead.
- Buffalo responded after the timeout with a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead, 10-9, before a BGSU point tied it up at 10-10. The point for the Falcons sparked a 6-1 stretch, including a 4-0 run and an Amanda Otten ace, for a 15-11 lead.
- The two teams went back-and-forth from there until a 4-1 BGSU stretch, including Hernandez's fourth ace, made it a 20-14 advantage with a Buffalo timeout.
- Buffalo tallied the first point after the timeout, but a 3-0 run for the Falcons followed for a 23-15 score. The Bulls worked for a 3-0 run, keeping the set alive at 23-18 with a BGSU timeout.
- The teams traded points after the timeout with the Falcons taking a 25-19 score.

- For the fourth time this season, the Falcons reached double-digit aces in a match, finishing with 10. Five different Falcons landed an ace with three having multiple.
- Amanda Otten led the Falcons in assists with 41 and added 10 digs, registering her third consecutive double-double. Otten now has a team-leading nine double-doubles this season.
- Anastasija Bozic registered a career-high 13 kills and 12 digs for the Falcons, finishing second in each stat on the team. The double-double marked the second of the year for Bozic.
- Sydnie Hernandez led the Falcons in the back row and in serving. Hernandez tallied a team-high 16 digs while landing a team-high four aces. It marks the second time this year Hernandez has had four or more aces in a match after landing five against NIU on Oct. 9.
- Avery Hobson led the Bowling Green attack with a team-high 19 kills. Hobson managed to maintain a .326 hitting percentage in the match as well, landing the 19 kills on 43 attacks with five errors.
- Kendall Williams paced the block for the Falcons with a total of six, including a career-high three solo blocks.
- With the win, the Falcons have now won 13 straight matches against the Bulls, dating back to the 2019 campaign.
