Falcons Storm Back For Reverse Sweep Over Akron On Senior Night

Otten Just Misses Triple-Double With 45 Assists, 11 Kills, Nine Digs

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team battled back against Akron on Saturday (Nov. 8), claiming a five-set match in reverse sweep fashion. After falling behind 2-0 in the sets, the Falcons fought for a 25-22 third set score. The momentum rolled into a 25-19 fourth set score that sent the match to a fifth set. In the fifth, Bowling Green registered a 15-10 score to complete the comeback. The win moves the Falcons to 14-14 on the season while being 8-8 in the MAC with two matches to play.
As for the individual stats, Amanda Otten led the way for the Falcons. She came a dig shy of a triple-double, finishing with 45 assists, 11 kills and nine digs. Otten also led the team in aces with a pair. As for the back row, Sydnie Hernandez paced the team with 23, her sixth 20-dig match of the season. Avery Anders added 14 while Isabelle Laube logged seven, both matching their respective career-highs. Jessica Andrews joined the effort with a team-leading 13 kills as well as six blocks, tying Helen Wilford for the team lead.Â

How It HappenedÂ
Set 1: Akron 25, Bowling Green 18
- The Falcons tallied the first two points of the set, but Akron answered for a 2-2 tie. BGSU reclaimed the lead, 5-3, but another pair of Zip tallies made it 5-5.
- The tie moved to 7-7 before a 3-0 Akron run pushed the Zips in front 10-7. The Falcons ended the run, but a 5-1 Akron stretch pushed the score to 15-9 at the media timeout.
- The two teams traded pairs of points with the Falcons working to chip away at the Akron lead. The score between the two moved to 20-15 with a BGSU timeout.
- Akron added two points to their total after the break for a 22-15 advantage to force the second Bowling Green timeout of the set.
- The Falcons worked for a 3-1 stretch, including an Amanda Otten ace, but Akron held on to take the first set, 25-18.
Set 2: Akron 25, Bowling Green 20
- The Falcons landed the first point of the set, but a 5-0 Akron run followed for a 5-1 score. BGSU tallied a pair of points, but the Zips answered for a 7-3 score and a Bowling Green timeout.
- Bowling Green worked for two points, but a 3-0 Akron run came in response for a 10-5 score. The same sequence followed for a 13-7 tally.Â
- The Falcons worked to chip away, but consecutive points for Akron extended their lead back to 19-14 with the second Bowling Green timeout of the set.
- The back-and-forth continued after the timeout with Akron taking the set with a 25-20 score.
Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Akron 20
- Akron opened the set with a 3-1 lead, but a 4-0 run for the Falcons swung the score to BGSU, 5-3. The Zips managed to work back to a 6-6 tie from there.
- The ties continued at each point up to a 10-10 score, but a 3-0 BGSU run made it a 12-10 Falcon advantage.Â
- Akron tied it again before two BGSU points for a 14-12 score. A 3-0 run for Akron made it a 15-14 Zips lead with the media timeout in the set.
- The Falcons worked to tie the score at 16-16. Akron moved ahead, but BGSU again tied it at 20-20. Two more tallies for the Zips made it 22-20 with a Bowling Green timeout.
- Back-to-back points for the Falcons followed after the stoppage, tying the set at 22-22 with an Akron timeout.
- Bowling Green added two more points to their tally, including a successful challenge, to force the second Zip timeout with a 24-22 score.
- A kill from Anastasija Bozic out of the timeout granted the Falcons a 25-22 set win to force a fourth set.
Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Akron 19
- BGSU started the set up 3-1, but Akron worked to tie it at 3-3 with ties following up to an 11-11 score in the set with the teams trading points.
- A 3-0 run for the Falcons made it a 13-11 Bowling Green advantage, trading points from there for a 15-13 lead at the media timeout.
- The point trading continued after the timeout until a 16-16 tie. Each team tallied a point, but back-to-back points for the Falcons made it a 19-17 lead to force an Akron timeout.
- Akron landed the first point after the timeout, but two more followed for the Orange and Brown, creating a 21-18 lead with Akron taking their second timeout.
- The Falcons maintained their momentum after the timeout, closing out the set with a 4-1 stretch for a 25-19 score, sending the match to a fifth set.
Set 5: Bowling Green 15, Akron 10
- The Falcons began the fifth set with a 3-1 lead, trading points from that point on until the media timeout with the teams switching sides after an 8-6 BGSU lead.
- Out of the timeout, Bowling Green added two more points for a 3-0 run, including an Otten ace, for a 10-6 lead and an Akron timeout.
- BGSU registered the first point after the timeout, but the Zips managed for a pair. The Falcons, however, were able to extend their lead out to 14-9 with Akron taking their second timeout.
- Akron landed the first point after the timeout, but a service error gave the Falcons the set and the match.

- The reverse sweep is the first of the season for the Falcons with the last at home coming on Oct. 4, 2024 against Western Michigan. The last overall reverse sweep for BGSU was at St. John's in the NIVC Semifinals on Dec. 14, 2024.Â
- Amanda Otten nearly registered a triple-double for the Falcons, finishing with a team-high 45 assists, a season-high 11 kills and nine digs. While she didn't hit the mark of a triple-double, she did log her team-leading eighth double-double of the season. As for her 11 kills, they came on 18 attacks with just one error for a .556 hitting percentage. Otten added a team-high two aces as well.Â
- Sydnie Hernandez led the back row for the Falcons with a team-leading 23 digs. The outing marked Hernandez's sixth 20-dig match of the season, coming just three shy of her career-high.Â
- Jessica Andrews paced the attack with a team-high 13 kills. Andrews also tied for the team lead in blocks with six and added five digs and an ace.Â
- Anastasija Bozic matched her career-high for both kills (11) and assists (3) while adding eight digs, one ace and one block for a full stat line.Â
- Avery Anders and Isabelle Laube both matched their career-highs in digs with Anders registering 14 and Laube logging seven.Â
- Kendall Williams landed a career-high eight kills for the Falcons on a career-high 19 attacks. She added the team's lone solo block in addition to three block assists.Â
- Helen Wilford joined in the team-lead for blocks, registering six block assists. Wilford added three kills to her stat line as well.
