Freshman Defender, Senior 'Keeper Recognized After BGSU's Two Road Wins Last Week
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- A pair of Bowling Green State University men's soccer standouts have earned Missouri Valley Conference honors. Freshman Aidan Flanders has been named MVC Defensive Player of the Week, while senior Jason Ball has been tabbed MVC Goalkeeper of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday morning (Oct. 6).
Both players earn an MVC weekly honor for the first time in their respective careers.
Flanders, a native of Rockford, Mich. (Rockford H.S.), contributed at both ends of the field as the Falcons picked up a pair of road wins last week. Flanders played all 90 minutes and recorded an assist in BG's 2-1 victory at Northern Kentucky last Tuesday (Sept. 29). Four days later, Flanders again played every second, and scored his first collegiate goal as BG recorded another 2-1 win, this time at Bradley in MVC play. The true freshman has started 10 of BG's 11 games this season, with the lone match he missed being due to injury.
Ball, who hails from Miamisburg, Ohio (Miamisburg H.S.), recorded a pair of wins in goal on the week. Ball made three saves in the victory at NKU on Tuesday, then tied his career high with nine stops in BGSU's 2-1 victory at Bradley on Saturday (Oct. 3). One of those nine saves was a diving stop of a second-half penalty kick, his second PK save of the season. BU's only goal was an 'own goal' after a cross was inadvertently headed into the net by a BG defender. On the year, Ball has a GAA of 0.75, and as mentioned, has saved both opponent PKs he has faced.
Flanders, Ball and the Falcons return to action this weekend, hosting Drake University in a Saturday-evening (Oct. 10) MVC matchup at Cochrane Stadium. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m., and -- as is the case for all of BGSU's home action -- admission is free.
