One Down, One To Go For Campbell
Javontae Campbell checked one scoring milestone off the list against Northern Illinois, eclipsing the 2,000-point mark for his collegiate career across all levels. Now, he's aiming for 1,000 in the Orange and Brown. With BGSU, Campbell has tallied 939 points, 61 shy of 1,000 for the Falcons. If he can reach 1,000 for BGSU he would be the first 1,000-point scorer for Bowling Green since Daeqwon Plowden ended his BGSU career with 1,618 points in 2022, eighth in program history. With six games left in the regular season, Campbell would need to average 10.2 points per game for the mark, but postseason points would count towards the milestone as well.
Scouting The Rockets
Since the last meeting between BGSU and UT, the Rockets have posted a record of 2-3, topping Ball State and Western Michigan while falling short to Akron, Kent State and James Madison. The losses to KSU and JMU were both by a possession. The five-game stretch has moved Toledo to 7-5 within the MAC, just a game in front of the Falcons in the MAC standings. In the first meeting, Toledo was led by Leroy Blyden Jr. with 19 points including the game-winning three-pointer.
BGSU vs. Toledo, All-Time
Bowling Green and Toledo will be meeting for the 186th time in program history and the second time this season. The last two meetings between the rivals have come down to the final shot with Toledo taking this year's first meeting and BGSU claiming last year's second, both in Savage Arena. In the game earlier this season, Bowling Green was paced by Javontae Campbell with 29 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. Sam Towns added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Orange and Brown in the game.
Glover's Block Party
Troy Glover II has been strong in the paint defensively for the Falcons, logging at least one block in 10 of the last 11 games for Bowling Green, including five in the first half against NIU. His handful of swats against the Huskies were the most by a Falcon since Jan. 3, 2023 when Rashaun Agee had five rejections against Eastern Michigan. As for the 11-game stretch, Glover has 21 blocks to increase his season total to 36, ranking third in the MAC. As a freshman at Trinity Christian College in 2022-23, Glover swatted away 104 blocks, ranking third in the country across all levels of basketball. Over the last two seasons at Missouri-St. Louis he compiled a total of 116 blocks, leading the league last year with 67.
A Veteran Presence
Justin Thomas has been a force for BGSU in the starting lineup this season. Playing 25.1 minutes per game, Thomas is averaging 5.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game this year, but his veteran presence has made a difference from the jump. In games that Thomas has started, BGSU has a record of 12-5, however, when Thomas isn't in the starting lineup the Falcons are 3-5 this season. Of the eight games that Thomas didn't start, he didn't appear in two and came off the bench in the other six after battling back from an injury. In the win over NIU, Thomas got the starting nod, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and no turnovers.
Campbell On Record-Breaking Pace
Through 25 games, Javontae Campbell is averaging 3.3 steals per game with 82 total. His average and total are both currently leading the nation. Campbell is currently on pace for 102 steals, which would break not only his own single-season record for the Falcons of 90 last season, but also threaten the current MAC record, set at 103 by Ball State's Bonzi Wells in 1997-98. For those looking to follow Campbell's projections, Falcon Sports Media Network's Tyler Kavalecz is doing a game-by-game update on his Twitter/X page (@TKavaleczSports).
Defense Holding The Key
Despite having one of the top 50 offenses in the nation, Bowling Green's defense has been the key factor in games this season. When the Falcons hold opponents below 70 points this year the team has a record of 13-1. However, when teams eclipse 70 points against BGSU, the Falcons are 2-9. Similarly, in wins this season the Orange and Brown have held opponents to 38.5-percent from the field, but in losses the opposing team is shooting 49.6-percent.
Falcons From Behind The Arc
The Falcons have been hit-and-miss from three this season, shooting above 45.0-percent from three six times, but below 30.0-percent nine times. In games shooting above 45.0-percent the Falcons are 6-0. However, in games shooting below 30.0-percent BGSU is 2-7. Similarly, in wins this season Bowling Green is shooting 39.6-percent from behind the arc while averaging 8.3 made three-pointers. In losses, those numbers drop to 24.4-percent from three with an average of 4.8 per game.
Campbell Assisting The Falcons
While Javontae Campbell has made his name known for scoring and steals for the Falcons, his assist totals are starting to make waves as well. Through 25 games this season, Campbell has led BGSU in assists 18 times. Against MAC opponents, Campbell is averaging 6.3 assists per game, ranking third in the conference. As for the season, Campbell has totaled 126 assists, sitting just outside the top 50 in the nation at 52 and fourth in the MAC. He's in a similar spot for points as well, scoring 462 this season to rank 51st in the country and third in the MAC.
