Buckeyes Top BGSU Tuesday in Columbus
March 31, 2026 | Softball
Falcons back in action this weekend at Kent State
The Falcons (15-15) put crooked numbers on the board in each of the five innings, but the Buckeyes (16-18) had crooked numbers in all four frames in which they batted, and OSU's numbers were just a little more crooked in three of those four innings.
The Buckeyes scored five times in each of the first two innings, and a six-run fourth sealed the deal. BGSU had a two-run first inning, then scored five times over the final two stanzas.
BG loaded the bases four times in five innings on Tuesday.
Senior Hannah Hunt drove in four of BGSU's seven runs, reaching base in all four plate appearances on her birthday. Hunt tripled, walked twice and was hit by a pitch. She has had nine RBI over her last two games.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• As we literally just mentioned, Hannah Hunt reached base in all four plate appearances against the Buckeyes. A native of nearby Pataskala, Ohio, she tripled, was hit by a pitch and walked twice on Tuesday (her birthday).
• The senior has had nine RBI over her last two games, including Sunday's 9-1 win over Buffalo. Beginning with her second at-bat of that UB game, Hunt has reached base in six-straight plate appearances, with at least one RBI in five of those six appearances.
BGSU-OSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons broke on top against Lorin Boutte in the first. With one out, Peyton Steffes hit a ball over the right fielder's head for a double, and Taylor Behrendt walked. After a lengthy at-bat which saw the runners move up on a wild pitch, Cameron Kaufman was hit by a 3-2 pitch to load the bases, and Ashley Chevalier's single to left scored Steffes with the game's first run.
• Then, Hannah Hunt was hit by a pitch to allow Behrendt to trot home and double the BGSU lead.
• But, OSU answered quickly. The first three batters in the Buckeye order each drew walks, prompting a pitching change for the Falcons. The next batter reached on an error, with a run crossing the plate and the bases remaining loaded. Then, Emma Tolley put a ball into the air on a windy day, and it carried over the fence for a grand slam that gave the hosts a 5-2 lead.
• The Falcons loaded the bases in the second inning, as Hanna Massaro reached on an error, Steffes walked and Behrendt was hit by a pitch, but Boutte and the Buckeyes got out of the inning unscathed.
• After a walk and an error, Sami Bewick doubled in the Buckeye second, and several batters later, a Lottie Landmesser homer gave the hosts a 10-2 lead after two innings.
• BG loaded the bases yet again in the third. After back-to-back walks to Hunt and Addie Martin, Kennedy Kay retired the next two batters. Hannah Simko singled, but Kay was able to get an inning-ending strikeout.
• Back-to-back homers by Sara Tarr and Hadley Parisien extended the Buckeye lead in the third inning, but BG got three runs back in the fourth. Behrendt reached on an error, and Kaufman singled. A ground ball advanced the runners, who both scored easily when Hunt drove a ball over the center fielder's head for a two-run triple. She would score when Martin lined the very next pitch to right for a single that made it a 12-5 game.
• But, OSU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning, including homers by Tarr and Parisien. Tarr's was a three-run shot. All of the Buckeyes' runs in that frame came after the first two batters had been retired.
• In the Falcon fifth, Massaro and Simko each walked on four pitches, and Steffes then walked on five pitches against Carter Wachtel. The OSU freshman got the first out on a liner to right, but Kaufman followed with a single, and one out later, Hunt walked on four pitches to score Simko. But, another line drive was caught by the shortstop to end the inning and the game.
• Hunt, as mentioned, reached base in all four plate appearances, driving in four runs. Kaufman was 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch, while Behrendt walked, was also plunked by a pitch and scored two runs.
• Simko and Martin each had a walk and a hit.
• Four Buckeyes had two hits apiece, with Tolley driving in five runs and Tarr four.
• A total of seven pitchers saw action in the game, with BG hurlers throwing 137 pitches and OSU pitchers tossing 149.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons' Wednesday (April 1) doubleheader at Youngstown State has been canceled due to the weather forecast, so BGSU's next scheduled action is a Friday (April 3) contest at Kent State. That game is scheduled to begin at Devine Diamond at 3:00 p.m.
• Then, the Falcons and Golden Flashes are slated to play a Saturday (April 4) twinbill, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
• BG will return home to face Toledo in a single game next Tuesday (April 7) and a doubleheader the following day.
