Terry Scores Twice as BG Blasts Wright State in Season Opener

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team scored early and often Thursday night (Aug. 20), rolling along to a 5-2 win over Wright State University at Cochrane Stadium. The non-conference match was the season opener for both teams.

With the win, the Falcons maintain possession of the I-75 Cup, a traveling trophy that goes to the winner of each season's BGSU-WSU match. BG has won three consecutive games vs. the Raiders.

Fifth-year Falcon Trace Terry scored a pair of goals in the win, including the first goal of the night with just over 12 minutes gone. Sophomore Tyson McCoy and freshman Lucas Brinkman each had a goal and an assist in the win, while soph Caue Ramos also found the back of the net.

BGSU outshot the Raiders by a 23-14 count, and the Falcons had a 12-6 lead in shots on goal. Enzo Gil made four saves in net for the home side, while Ben Schultheis had seven stops for WSU.

After Terry's goal, Ramos and Brinkman scored just 2:15 apart to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead late in the first half. Alessandro Duran got the Raiders on the board with a penalty kick in the 54th minute, but McCoy answered just 11 seconds later to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead.

Terry converted a penalty kick with just over seven minutes to go, before Tedrick Neptune got a goal back for WSU with just two minutes remaining.

Terry has scored a total of five goals in BGSU's last three meetings with Wright State.

B!G PLAYS
• The Falcons took the lead for good with 12:21 elapsed. Sophomore Diego Ramirez headed the ball into the penalty area, and classmate Tyson McCoy poked it past a WSU defender. The ball went to fifth-year Falcon Trace Terry on the left side of the box, and Terry's one-time effort was out of reach of the diving Ben Schultheis, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
• With just under 10 minutes left in the half, sophomore Caue Ramos stole an errant WSU pass deep in the Raiders' defensive end. Ramos took a few touches as he entered the penalty area, then slotted the ball into the net.
• Then, just 2:15 later, freshman Lucas Brinkman gave BGSU a three-goal lead with a tremendous individual effort. Brinkman picked up the ball in BG's own half of the field, and went on a run down the left side of the pitch. He cut the ball back across the top of the 18-yard box and, from the left corner of the box, hit a low shot that caromed off of the far post and into the net.
• Eight minutes into the second half, the Raiders were awarded a penalty kick after a handball infraction on the Falcons. Alessandro Duran converted the kick to get WSU on the board.
• But, just 11 seconds later, the Falcons answered. Freshman Matheus Filipe played a long ball forward, and a flick-on by Brinkman sent the pass to McCoy on the left side of the penalty box. The sophomore hit a shot that beat Schultheis far post, giving BG a 4-1 lead.
• McCoy was taken down in the box in the 83rd minute of the match, and Terry stepped up and converted the ensuing penalty kick to put the Falcons ahead by four. A nifty pass by Brian Burkett put Tedrick Neptune behind the BG defense with just under two minutes to go, as Neptune's late goal capped the scoring.

STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BGSU's total of five goals was the Falcons' highest in a game in nearly two years, since a 5-2 victory over Detroit Mercy on Oct. 8, 2024.
• The Falcons got goals from a total of three players during the entire 2025 season. On Thursday night, three different players scored in the first half alone, with four different Falcons scoring in the match.
• Five of the Falcons' 11 starters – Matheus Filipe, Aidan Flanders, Tyson McCoy, Joshua Pedersen and Diego Ramirez – each made the first start of their respective collegiate careers. For four of those five, the opening kickoff marked their first collegiate playing time. Filipe, Flanders and Pedersen all are freshmen, while Ramirez did not see action in his freshman season of 2025.
• Four of the Falcons' five substitutes on Thursday night were making their collegiate debuts as well. That quartet included sophomore Sawyer Wilbanks and freshmen Lucas Brinkman, Mouhamadou Bachir Cisse and Luciano Perez-Cernuda.
• BGSU now leads Wright State, 15-8-3, in the all-time series, and the Falcons have won three consecutive series meetings.
• Trace Terry has scored five career goals vs. WSU. He found the back of the net in BG's 3-2, come-from-behind win two years ago at Cochrane (Aug. 23, 2024), and he had a two-goal game in the Falcons' 3-0 road win last season (Aug. 28, 2025).
• Terry now has seven career two-goal games.
• Terry scored the 29th and 30th goals of his BGSU career in Thursday's win. He is now tied for fifth place on the BG career goals list with Dennis Wesley (1983-84).
• With 73 career points, Terry has moved into seventh place on that Falcon career chart.
• Sophomore Caue Ramos scored the first goal of his collegiate career. Ramos had one point on an assist during his freshman campaign.
• Soph Tyson McCoy and freshman Lucas Brinkman each picked up their first career goal as well as their first career assist in Thursday's victory.
• Sophomore Diego Ramirez earned his first career point on an assist, as did freshman Matheus Filipe.

• The Falcons will hit the road for the next two matches, beginning with a Sunday (Aug. 23) contest vs. Duquesne. That game will begin at 5:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
