Sharp’s Touchdown Came On A 59-Yard Reception

AMES, Iowa - The Bowling Green State University football team took on the Iowa State Cyclones Saturday (Sept. 19) on the road. Jay Kastantin and Winn Sharp connected for the first score of Sharp's BGSU career, coming on a 59-yard reception. The final score fell the way of Iowa State in a 55-7 tally. BGSU will now shift back home after a two-game road trip, hosting South Florida next weekend (Sept. 26) for Homecoming in Bowling Green.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Iowa State won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half. Bowling Green elected to receive and defend the south end zone.
On the opening drive, Jay Kastantin connected with Nakai Amachree for an 11-yard first down. Passes to Brennan Ridley and Trey Johnson continued to move the Falcons downfield, but the drive stalled before crossing into Cyclone territory with the first punt of the game.
The first Iowa State drive moved in similar fashion. The Cyclones managed to cross midfield, but a 54-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, granting Bowling Green possession at their own 36 to start their second drive with the game still scoreless.
Iowa State registered the first score of the game, utilizing a pair of chunk plays to work down field for the 7-0 score.
The Falcons answered quickly. Austyn Dendy started the drive with a 14-yard carry before adding two more on the ground. From there, Kastantin found Winn Sharp on a slant route for a 59-yard receiving touchdown, the first score of Sharp's career and his longest reception, for a 7-7 tie.
On the following kick, Iowa State took the return to the end zone to reclaim the lead, 14-7.
The Cyclones worked for the ball back and attempted a deep throw, but Drey Braxton came away with the 50/50 ball for his first interception as a Falcon.
Iowa State added a score before the end of the quarter, stretching their lead to 21-7. ISU later recorded the only two touchdowns of the second quarter for a 35-7 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, Cashmire Lewis registered a second down sack in the red zone, helping force a field goal from Iowa State from 39-yards out for a 38-7 score. The first touchdown of the second half came on a punt return for the Cyclones making it 45-7 with the score holding to the end of the quarter.
The Cyclones added a score and a field goal in the fourth for a 55-7 final.

GAME NOTES

Hauling in the Bowling Green touchdown of the game, Winn Sharp tallied his first collegiate touchdown. The score came on a 59-yard reception, the longest of his BGSU career.
The pass to Sharp marked the longest pass of the season for quarterback Jay Kastantin as well.
Drey Braxton hauled in an interception on a 50/50 ball in the first quarter, his first pick in the Orange and Brown.
Early in the third quarter, Cashmire Lewis came up with a sack in the red zone on second down, the first of his career. The sack aided in stopping the Cyclone offense and forcing a field goal.
Mike Wright III recorded four tackles in the game for the Falcons, marking a new career-high after posting three four times in his collegiate career.
Elijah Durham-Smith tallied his first career tackles in the game, finishing the contest with three.
Nakai Amachree snagged a career-high three receptions for the Falcons, leading the team in the stat for the game.
