Bowling Green State University Athletics
Gambling
NCAA rules prohibit BGSU student-athletes, coaches and university staff from participating in any gambling activity related to sports - including college, amateur and professional sports. Student-athletes are prohibited from placing or accepting a bet related to any sporting event in a sport that the NCAA sponsors. This prohibition includes gambling that may otherwise be legal under state and federal law (e.g., Las Vegas sports book) and the amount of the wager is irrelevant to whether the activity is permissible or not. Any activity in which an individual wagers or contributes any money or item of value with the possibility of receiving any money or item of value in return based on the outcome of a sporting event, the performance of an athletic team or the performance of a specific athlete is considered to be a gambling activity by the NCAA.
Some examples of gambling activities include, but are not limited to:
* Entering a “squares pool” at a Super Bowl party – even if the pool only involves friends and/or family
* Placing a bet on the outcome or the total score of a sporting event
* Participation in fantasy leagues
* Entering a bracket pool or other “March Madness” contests based on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship
* Entering a newspaper or internet contest based on the outcome of athletic contests
* Providing information about specific student-athletes or a team to anyone involved in any gambling activities
