Teresa Wilson
- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Softball Coach
Softball coaching legend Teresa Wilson completed her second season on the Bowling Green State University staff, and her first as associate head coach, in the spring of 2020. Head coach Sarah Willis announced the addition of Wilson as a volunteer assistant coach in January of 2019, and she was elevated to her current position in the fall of 2019.
In 2020, Wilson helped the Falcons post a record of 11-6 in the shortened season, with a 5-0 mark at the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational on what proved to be the final weekend of the campaign.
Under Wilson's guidance, freshman Payton Gottshall burst onto the collegiate scene with a one-hitter in her BG debut, and posted an 11-5 record in the circle, striking out 128 hitters in 87 innings of work. And, at the plate, BG batted .259 as a team. Sammy Dees returned after missing the bulk of the 2019 season due to injury, hitting .474 with an on-base percentage of .565 in 14 games in the '20 campaign.
Wilson brought a veritable plethora of knowledge and experience to the Falcon program. A 10-time participant in the Women’s College World Series as a player and a coach, she has served as a collegiate head coach at Oregon, Minnesota, Washington and Texas Tech. Wilson also was an assistant coach at Arizona, and has coached several teams in National Pro Fastpitch.
“It is an honor and amazing opportunity for the Falcon softball program to add Coach Wilson to the coaching staff,” said Willis at the time of the hiring. “To say our program is excited would be an understatement as she will provide tremendous knowledge and experience to our coaching staff and players.”
Wilson is one of only six coaches to take two different teams to the WCWS, and she has been named her conference’s Coach of the Year at three different universities.
She has a 21-year head-coaching record of 824-484-1, good for a winning percentage of .630. She was tied for 46th all time in NCAA Division I wins entering the 2018 season.
“I am excited about the opportunity to work with Coach Willis, her staff and team as they pursue their goal of taking Bowling Green softball to the next level,” said Wilson at the time of her hiring.
Wilson began her head-coaching career at Oregon in 1986, and also coached at Minnesota before starting the softball program at Washington in 1991. She won conference coach-of-the-year honors at all three schools.
While in Seattle, Wilson guided the Huskies to six WCWS appearances in her 11 years, including a pair of national runner-up finishes. The program qualified for the NCAA Regionals in 1994, just the second year of the team’s existence, beginning a run of 10 consecutive seasons of national postseason play for UW.
Wilson coached at Texas Tech from 2005-08, with the current BGSU head coach on her Red Raider pitching staff all four years.
Wilson then served as pitching coach for legendary coach Mike Candrea at Arizona, helping the Wildcats to a national runner-up finish in 2010.
Wilson moved to the professional ranks, coaching the Carolina Diamonds in the 2012 season. She returned to NPF in 2017, when she was named the head coach of the Beijing Shougang Eagles. Beijing is managed by the Chinese Softball Association and is made up primarily of players from the CSA national team pool.
Wilson, a native of Pickering, Mo., attended Missouri, and is one of the top pitchers in that program’s history. During her career with the Tigers, she was a two-time all-region selection, and she earned All-America honors in 1983. Wilson owns multiple MU records, including career complete games (118) and shutouts (55). She is second in school history in both career wins (102) and career ERA (0.47), and owns three of the top-10 single-season win totals in program history.
She was the first person to both play and coach in the WCWS.
Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree from Missouri in 1984 in secondary physical education and journalism. She was the first softball player inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame, earning that distinction in 1995.
