Story No. 2 From 2011-12: Stroh Center Opens; Volleyball Stuns Michigan State
July 25, 2012 | General, Volleyball
Throughout the summer, the Bowling Green Athletics Department will be counting down the top 10 stories of the 2011-12 school year, as voted on by members of the Athletics Department administration and the Athletics Communications Department. We will release the list one at a time throughout the summer, until the No. 1 moment of 2011-12 is revealed on Wednesday, Aug. 1 -- the day before BGSU football camp opens.
Sept. 9, 2011 is a day that will go down as one of the biggest days in BGSU Athletics history. The Stroh Center was dedicated that afternoon and the Bowling Green volleyball program capped off an amazing day by stunning undefeated Michigan State in four sets in the first intercollegiate athletic event ever played in the arena.
In a moving ceremony, the Stroh Center dedication opened the building to the general public. Then the volleyball team overwhelmed the Spartans in front of a BGSU home volleyball record crowd of 2,961. Both teams entered the match at 6-0 on the year, but Michigan State was heavily favored and receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll. Danielle Tonyan and Paige Penrod combined for 41 kills and Emily Kauth added 13 kills and six blocks.
