For the fourth year in a row, BGSU Athletics will be counting down the top stories of the year all summer long. 2012-13 was a banner year for athletics at BGSU and the list of best moments of the year is arguably the strongest since beginning this annual event.
We will release the list one at a time throughout the summer until the No. 1 story of the year is announced on Aug. 5 -- just as BGSU football camp gets underway and the 2013-14 season has officially started! Don't forget to purchase your season tickets NOW!
Kerrie Beach, Petra Martin, Penny Dean Named MAC Coaches Of The Year
BGSU Athletics had a lot of strong performances throughout 2012-13 and the Falcons were well-represented when year-end voting was announced. Gymnastics coach Kerrie Beach, Swimming coach Petra Martin and Tennis coach Penny Dean all earned their first career MAC Coach of the Year awards.
Beach earned the award (FULL RELEASE HERE) after the gymnastics squad improved from 1-5 in conference play to 3-3 in 2013. Jamilah Ali and Alyssa Nocella earned MAC Championships and the Falcons showed improvement at NCAA Regionals, with a score of 194.035, up from 193.630 and 190.865 the last two years.
Martin earned the award (FULL RELEASE HERE) after the swimming team placed third at the MAC Championships, the program's best result since 2004 and an improvement of five spots over a year prior. Fourteen Falcons qualified for finals, up from five a year ago, and Martin coached MAC Champion Alexa Harris, the team's first champion since 2009.
Dean earned the award (FULL RELEASE HERE) after the tennis team completed arguably its best season in program history, winning 12 straight matches at one point, finishing second in the MAC in the regular season and advancing to the MAC Tournament championship match.
