Moment No. 1 From 2009-10: The Freddie Barnes Story
August 02, 2010 | Football
Throughout the summer, we've been releasing our list of the Top 10 Moments of the 2009-10 athletic year at BGSU. The list was compiled and voted on by members of the Athletics Department administration and the Athletic Communications office. Today, we look back at our No. 1 moment of the year.
The Freddie Barnes Story: From Record-Breaking Year To Biletnikoff Finalist
Although Freddie Barnes caught 82 passes as a sophomore, and injury-plagued junior season kept him under the radar heading into his final year with the Orange and Brown in 2009. Nobody expected Barnes to be the headline stealer of the season but that all changed in a hurry. He set a school and Doyt L. Perry Stadium record with 15 catches in week one, finishing with 157 yards and two touchdowns. And those weren't even close to the most eye-popping numbers of the year. Two weeks later, he broke his own record with 17 catches at Marshall and then three weeks later destroyed that number. In the catch-22 game at Kent State, Barnes had 22 receptions for 278 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Falcons from behind for a win. He had four more double-digit reception games and headed into the Humanitarian Bowl needing four catches to tie the NCAA single-season record. Instead, he went out with 17 receptions to set a new record with 155 catches on the season. Obviously, he led the country in receptions, but also led in touchdown receptions, with 19, and ranked second with 1,770 receiving yards. At the end of the season, Barnes was invited to Orlando as a Biletnikoff Finalist as one of the top three receivers in the country, along with Texas' Jordan Shipley and Notre Dame's Golden Tate.
