Bowling Green will now be idle until they return to action in the home finale on Nov. 13 hosting Ball State in a 1 p.m. contest. BG concludes the 1999 season with a road game at Central Florida on Nov. 20.
The Falcons, who improved to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference with the win over Central Michigan, rode a stingy defense and the running of red-shirt freshman Joe Alls to the victory.
The Falcon defense went into the contest ranked 10th in the MAC yielding almost 188 yards rushing per game, but limited the Chippewas to the second lowest total of the season (43 yards). The defense held Tennessee Tech to just 37 yards on the ground in their Sept. 11 game earlier this year.
In fact, CMU did not get into the positive column in rushing yards for the game until there was less than five minutes left in the first half.
The defense limited CMU to just 126 yards total offense in the first half while stopping the Chippewas on all four of their possessions in the first 30 minutes which started in Falcon territory.
While the defense was putting together one of its best efforts of the season, the Falcon offense used touchdown drives to start the game and the second half, sandwiched between a second quarter touchdown, to build a 21-0 lead. After CMU put its only points on the board at the 9:10 mark of the third quarter, and it looked like they might get back in the contest, BG responded with 10 points in a 2:27 span early in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
BG rushed for a season-best 223 yards as Alls accounted for 134 of those on 29 carries, both career highs. Alls' rushing total was also his first time he went over the century mark.
