THIS WEEK: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team completes a five-game road swing this week, playing just one contest. The Falcons, on the road for the sixth time in seven games, will head to the Motor City to do battle with the University of Detroit Mercy Saturday (Dec. 11). That game is tentatively scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Detroit's Calihan Hall (8,837).
The start time for the BGSU-UDM game is tentative because it is the second game of a doubleheader. The Detroit men host Massachusetts in a televised game that begins at 3:05 p.m.
Following the UDM game, the Falcons will take a break for final exams before returning to the court Dec. 20. That evening, the Brown and Orange will host Washington State in one of only two home contests scheduled in the 10-game non-league slate.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU enters the UDM game with a 2-4 overall record. After winning two of the three games the week prior, the Falcons lost a pair of road games to in-state foes last week. The Brown and Orange fell to Xavier Wednesday (Dec. 1) by an 87-72 count before losing at Ohio State, 86-56, Saturday (Dec. 4).
The Falcons are 1-0 at home, 0-3 on the road and 1-1 in neutral-site contests.
Sophomore guard Francine Miller leads the Falcons in scoring, with 18.2 points per game, and ranks second on the team in rebounding (5.7 rpg) assists (2.2 apg) and steals (2.2 spg). Miller is shooting .486 from the field, and a stellar .682 (15-of-22) from three-point range.
Junior guard Angie Farmer is second on the team with 12.0 points per game. Farmer, who came off the bench for the first five games, started her first career game Saturday at OSU. She is tied with Miller for the team lead in three-pointers made, with 15.
Senior forward Sherry Kahle is third on the team in scoring (11.5), and paces the team in rebounding (6.8).
Junior forward Afra Smith and sophomore center Dana Western round out the team's top-five in scoring with 6.7 and 6.2 points per game, respectively.
Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Brown and Orange with 4.5 assists and 2.3 steals per outing, while averaging 3.5 points.
Wappes joins Kahle, Miller, Afra Smith and Western in the probable starting lineup. All but Western (five starts) have started every game this year.
BG ended the 1998-99 campaign with a 13-14 overall record, and the Falcons finished in third place in the East Division of the Mid-American Conference with a 9-7 league record.
The Brown and Orange, seeded fifth for the MAC Tournament, lost a quarterfinal game to host Akron, the fourth seed.
BGSU is shooting .409 from the field this year, while the opponents are shooting .412. The Falcons are scoring 72.5 points per contest, but allowing 80.2. BGSU is averaging 38.2 boards per game to the opponents' 45.7. The Falcons have shot .380 from three-point land, making 49 treys in 129 attempts.
DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her second season at her alma mater, and has a record of 15-18. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 13th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 197-137 (.590). She came to BGSU after spending 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her last five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
SCOUTING DETROIT: Detroit enters the week with a 4-3 record on the season, and the Titans will host Toledo Wednesday (Dec. 8) before facing BGSU three days later. Last weekend, UDM defeated both South Alabama, 74-66 (Dec. 4), and host Florida A&M, 77-53 (Dec. 5), to win the Rattlerette Classic. The Titans' top-two scorers, senior guard Carrie Banks and sophomore G/F Molly Peterman, were named to the all-tournament team. UT and BG will mark the fourth and fifth MAC teams, respectively, that UDM has played this season. The Titans won at Central Michigan to open the season, but lost on the road to both Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. Banks leads the team with 13.9 points per game, while Peterman is averaging 12.9 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds. Banks also paces the Titans in assists (4.0) and steals (4.4). Sophomore guard Michelle James has 9.4 points per contest, while junior guard Shari Hill and sophomore F/C Saritta Hines average 8.3 and 7.7 points, respectively. Hines has 15 blocked shots through seven games. Banks and Peterman have started every game, while Hines has started six, and Hill and junior guard Tia Winters five each. Anne Rexford is in her first season as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES: BGSU trails Detroit, 7-6, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Falcons have won four consecutive games from the Titans, including last year's 82-73 conquest at Anderson Arena (Nov. 22, 1998). BGSU is 2-4 in road games vs. UDM, but won the last meeting there, a 66-64 verdict on a last-second basket three years ago (Dec. 21, 1996).
LAST WEEK: Last Wednesday (Dec. 1), for the first time all season, the Falcons did not have a better shooting percentage than the opponent ... host Xavier had a .524 success rate from the field to BG's .453, and the Musketeers had more rebounds and fewer turnovers than the Brown and Orange ... the result was an 87-72 XU win ... BGSU used a 9-0 run to take an 11-10 lead just five minutes into the contest, and the Falcons were within four points when a Jaymee Wappes jumper off a steal made it 25-21, Xavier, with seven minutes left in the half ... the hosts, however, scored the next nine points to take a 13-point lead, and BG never got closer than six points thereafter ... Francine Miller had another stellar night, scoring a game-high 26 points ... Miller, who tied her career scoring high set just nine days prior, also led BG with six rebounds ... Angie Farmer hit double digits for the fourth-straight game, with 10 points off the bench ... all five XU starters were in double figures ... the Musketeers, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year (and nearly won at UConn in that round), were paced by 16 points from Jennifer Phillips ... Amy Waugh and Nicole Levandusky each had 15 markers, with Waugh dishing out 10 assists ... on Saturday (Dec. 4), the Falcons lost at Ohio State by an 86-56 score ... trailing by 10 points at the half, BG couldn't keep the host Buckeyes from slowly pulling away in the second half ... the Brown and Orange scored the first two baskets of the game, holding the hosts without a point for the first 3:39 ... the contest was tied three times in the early going, and BG trailed by just two points before a 9-0 OSU run gave the Bucks a 30-19 lead with under three minutes left in the half ... BG was within eight before an OSU steal and layup with just two seconds left made it a 10-point contest at the break ... the Falcons, who outrebounded the taller Bucks by a 21-18 margin in the first half, shot just .259 from the floor in the initial 20 minutes ... in the second stanza, OSU scored the first five points, and slowly built the lead. Sherry Kahle, who had three fouls in the first half, was whistled for her fourth foul in the first minute of the half, and was called for her fifth foul with 11:06 left in the contest ... Kahle, despite playing just 19 minutes, led BG with 12 points on the afternoon ... she played just three minutes in the second half ... two other Falcon starters, Afra Smith and Miller, hit double digits with 10 points apiece in the game ... Kahle and Dana Western each had eight rebounds, while Miller and Wappes had four assists apiece ... Miller also had a game-high four steals ... Lauren Shenk led the Buckeyes with 17 points off the bench ... her five field goals included four three-pointers.
MILLER ON THE MARK: Sophomore Francine Miller, one of the Falcons' top players in her initial campaign, has picked up right where she had left off ... Miller led the Brown and Orange in points (21), rebounds (12) and steals (4) in the season opener at Youngstown State ... vs. St. Bonaventure, Miller had a career-high 26 points, adding eight rebounds ... she made seven of her 10 shots from the field, including both of her three-point attempts, and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line ... Miller had nine and 17 points, respectively, in the games in Montana ... she was slowed by an injury in those games, and her playing time there was somewhat limited ... she tied her newly-set career high with 26 points at Xavier Wednesday (Dec. 1), going 6-for-8 from three-point land ... Miller was held to 10 points at OSU Saturday (Dec. 4), but had four assists and four steals ... she is shooting three-pointers at a whopping .682 success rate ... Miller, 15-for-22 behind the arc, also leads the team in free-throw percentage (.880).
YOU MAY FIRE WHEN READY, MA'AM: Last year, BG broke the school single-season records in both three-pointers attempted and made ... the Falcons made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts ... those totals shattered the old records of 97 triples made and 296 attempted, set by the 1994-95 squad ... if the first six games are any indication, those records are in serious jeopardy in 1999-2000 ... BGSU has attempted 129 treys, making 49, during that time ... that is an average of 8.2 three-pointers made and 21.5 attempted per game ... those numbers project to over 212 successful "threes" in 559 attempts over a 26-game schedule ... believe it or not, opponents have hoisted a total of 188 shots from behind the arc, an average of 31.3 per game ... BG foes have made 61 treys this year ... the opponents had taken at least 30 three-point attempts in every game, before Xavier attempted 27 and OSU 17 last week.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: A number of current Falcons already are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... sophomore Francine Miller currently ranks first in career three-point percentage (.485, 49-of-101), while junior Angie Farmer is third (.429, 48-of-112) ... Miller is fifth all-time with her 49 three-pointers made, while Farmer is sixth with 48 ... seniors Jaymee Wappes and Sherry Kahle are close behind with 42 and 41, respectively ... Kahle is fourth all-time with 145 three-point attempts, while Wappes is tied for sixth with 124 tries.
CAPTAIN'S LOG: BGSU's lone seniors will captain the Falcons as the squad boldly goes where no team has gone before (into the 21st Century) ... Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes are the co-captains of the 1999-2000 team.
MEET THE NEW KIDS: Seven of the 12 players on the Falcon roster are newcomers, including six freshmen ... junior transfer Afra Smith, redshirt freshman Rachal Hamilton and true frosh Pam Brown, Kim Griech, Megan Jerome, Regina Smith and Karen Stocz all joined the BG squad this fall.
WELCOME BACK: The Falcons have just five returnees from the 1998-99 squad ... in fact, only three players on the 12-woman roster were at BGSU prior to head coach Dee Knoblauch's arrival in August of 1998 ... those three are senior co-captains Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes and junior Angie Farmer ... sophomores Francine Miller and Dana Western round out the returnees for the Brown and Orange ... Kahle and Miller are returning starters, while Wappes was a part-time starter a year ago.
BGSU SIGNS THREE: Head coach Dee Knoblauch announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period ... on Nov. 17, the Falcons announced that Andrea Ault, Kelly Kapferer and Stefanie Wenzel will join the BGSU program next year ... Ault is a 6-0 forward who attends Urbana High School in Urbana, Ohio ... Kapferer, a 6-2 forward from Jefferson, Ohio, currently attends Jefferson H.S. ... Wenzel, a 6-0 guard from Sussex, Wis., attends Arrowhead Union H.S. in Hartland ... the Falcons plan to sign one more player during the late signing period in April.
FALCON NOTES: The Falcons made 12 three-pointers in the Morehead State game (Nov. 27), a total that would have tied a school record ... one problem, though ... the Brown and Orange had set a new record the night before, with the 14 treys vs. Mississippi ... the Falcons and Lady Rebels combined to make 31 three-point field goals in 75 attempts ... both totals are believed to be NCAA Division I single-game records, pending confirmation from the NCAA Statistics Office ... in that Ole Miss game, the Falcons had five freshmen on the floor at the same time ... Rachal Hamilton entered the BG lineup with 3:06 remaining in the Ole Miss game, joining classmates Kim Griech, Megan Jerome, Regina Smith and Karen Stocz ... junior guard Angie Farmer was named to the all-tournament team at the GranTree Inn Classic ... Farmer tied her career high with a 21-point effort against Mississippi, and added 20 vs. Morehead State ... she tied her own school record by draining seven three-point field goals against Ole Miss ... with the win over St. Bonaventure (Nov. 22), the Falcons kept an impressive streak going ... BGSU has captured 11 of the last 12 home openers ... the only loss during that time came to nationally-ranked Notre Dame, an eventual national semifinalist, three years ago ... that SBU game was a tale of two halves ... the Falcons struggled in the first half, shooting just .333 from the field to the Bonnies' .400 ... addtionally, SBU had outrebounded the Falcons, 30-17, and had made seven three-pointers to BG's three ... after the break, however, the Falcons made 17-of-32 shots (.531) from the field, while holding SBU to a 10-for-33 (.303) performance ... BGSU grabbed 23 boards to the visitors' 16, and held Bona to a 1-for-15 (.067) effort from three-point land ... BGSU outscored SBU, 51-27, in the final 20 minutes ... BG finished third in an in-season tourney for the third time in as many outings ... the Falcons lost the first game, but won the second game, at each of last year's tourneys as well as at Montana State ... the Falcons have not won an in-season tournament in nearly 11 years ... the Brown and Orange captured the Illini Classic (Dec. 2-3, 1988), but have not won a tourney since then ... BGSU has posted three second-place finishes, eight third-place showings and a fourth-place finish in that time ... BGSU has won three MAC Tournaments since capturing the Illini Classic, in 1989, 1993 and 1994 ... the 1999-2000 season marks the 27th year of BGSU women's basketball ... over the first 26 seasons (plus six games), the Falcons have won 62.0 percent of the time, with a 414-254 overall record ... in 18 years of MAC play, BGSU has a 213-88 league ledger (.708).
