THE SERIES ...
Bowling Green leads in the all-time series versus Ferris State with a 45-27-8 mark. BGSU won last year's season series with a 2-0-1 mark outscoring the Bulldogs 12-9. BG has recorded a 28-12-4 record in home games against FSU.
The Falcons are 2-0-2 in their last four home games against FSU, while recording an 8-1-2 mark in its last 11 home contests versus the Bulldogs.
PREVIEWING UPCOMING OPPONENT ...
Ferris State is coming off a two-game sweep at Bemidji State (8-0, 4-2) that improved the Bulldogs overall record to 6-6-0. FSU has a 4-6 mark in CCHA play.
Freshman defenseman Troy Milam (3-6--9, 3 PPG) and senior center Rob Kozak (2-7--9) lead FSU in scoring. Freshman left wing Chris Kunitz has a team-best five goals, while freshman left wing Phil Lewandowski has two power-play goals and two game-winners.
Junior netminder Vince Owen (2-3, 2.82, .888) and sophomore goalie Phil Osaer (4-3, 2.01, .920) have split time between the pipes.
FSU's power play has scored on 12 of its 83 opportunities (14.5%), while the Bulldog penalty killing unit has been successful on 55 of its 65 chances (84.6%). Ferris has started games strong this year outscoring its opponents 13-7 in the opening stanza, but only 14-10 in the middle period. FSU has been outscored in the third period, 13-8.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEKEND ...
Bowling Green played nearly even with the fourth-ranked Michigan State Spartans for 54 minutes but fell by a 3-1 score at Munn Arena on Friday evening.
MSU struck first at 4:25 when an MSU shot bounced off Damon Whitten for his sixth goal of the year. BG freshman Ryan Fultz tied the game 22 seconds later with his second of the year off assists from Greg Day and Michael Jones. MSU's Sean Patchell scored the game-winner at 12:55 of the opening stanza and Adam Hall completed the scoring with 5:17 left in the third period.
BG freshman netminder Tyler Masters made 30 saves including 13 in each of the first two periods. MSU goalie Joe Blackburn was credited with 18 stops. BG's penalty killing units stopped all five Spartan chances, while the Falcon power- play went zero-for-three.
A controversial ruling in favor of Michigan State late in Saturday's contest propelled the Spartans to a 5-2 victory over the Falcons.
With the score tied at two, a shot by MSU's Brad Fast was caught by Masters, but after a lengthy discussion by the four on- ice officials and consultation with an MSU goal judge, the Spartans were awarded the go-ahead goal.
Bowling Green scored first at 10:45 of the opening period when freshman Tyler Knight netted his second of the campaign off a feed from Marc Barlow.
MSU's Adam Hall scored a short-handed marker at 18:21 pulling MSU even at the first intermission. MSU's Brian Maloney scored the lone second period goal, but BG's Greg Day scored his team-leading sixth of the year at 3:32 of the third to tie the game at two. Following the "gift" goal, MSU scored at 13:35 (Maloney's second of the game) and added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring.
Masters finished with 29 saves, with MSU's Ryan Miller credited with 17 stops. BG went one-for-seven with the man-advantage, while stopping all six MSU power-play chances.
FALCON TIDBITS ...
BG rookie goalie Tyler Masters stopped MSU's leading goal- scorer Adam Hall on a penalty shot just 2:49 into Saturday's contest. It was the first save for a BG goalie in a penalty shot situation since Aaron Ellis stopped WMU's Chris Brooks on Jan. 15, 1993. BG has allowed only two penalty shot goals in nine attempts in school history.
Former defenseman Glen Shirton stopped the first opponent penalty shot (before goalies were required to be in net) starting a string of six consecutive stops by the Falcons. BG opponents had scored on the last two penalty shot attempts prior to Masters' save on Saturday.
Greg Day's third period power-play goal snapped an 0-for-16 streak with the man-advantage. He has a team-leading six goals this year, after scoring 10 goals in 38 games last season.
After allowing at least one power-play goal in each of its first seven games, BG's penalty killers stopped all 11 MSU power-play chances over the weekend extending their current streak of consecutive kills to 14. In the last three contests, the Falcons have killed off 18 of 19 opponent power-play chances.
