TOLEDO, OHIO - Despite 15 second-half points from Francine Miller, the Falcons fell to host Toledo in the latest battle for Northwest Ohio bragging rights. The game marked the only regular-season meeting between the two schools.
The first half saw 13 lead changes and seven ties before the Rockets took a two-point margin into the break. The Falcons' (3-11 overall, 1-3 MAC) biggest lead of the half was six points after back-to-back three-pointers by senior co-captains Jaymee Wappes and Sherry Kahle. BG led, 24-18, with 8:29 left in the half.
The Rockets battled back, and Jennifer Markwood's two free throws made the score 36-34, UT, at the break. Those charity tosses represented the only first-half points for Markwood, UT's leading scorer. She was held to seven points on the night, sinking just one basket.
The Rockets (5-8, 2-1 MAC) never trailed in the second half, and opened the lead to 10 points after a 12-4 run to start the second 20 minutes. The Falcons fought back to within three points with a 7-0 run that included a pair of treys from Dana Western. Western had her second consecutive double-digit scoring effort off the bench, with 10 points on 4-of-5 overall shooting.
The hosts, however, kept bombing away from three-point land, and got the lead back out to double digits. After a Miller layup made the score 65-59 with eight minutes left, the Rockets held the Falcons to just four points the rest of the night. By contrast, UT scored 18 more markers, including the last 12 at the charity stripe.
On the evening, UT went 13-of-29 (.448) from three-point land, with Courtney Risinger's four leading the way. Adriane Bryant led four Rockets in double figures with 21 points, and she added 11 assists. Tara Overaitis (15), Risinger (14) and Karin Husbeck (10) also reached double digits. Markwood had a game-high 15 rebounds, and Bryant added 11 assists.
Miller led the Falcons with 17 points and nine boards, while Afra Smith scored 12 points. Western, as mentioned, also hit double figures with 10 points. Over the last two games, Western is 9-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-5 from three-point land.
The game marked the only scheduled regular-season meeting between BG and UT, and the only scheduled game against her sister for Sherry Kahle. Kahle's younger sibling, Teresa, is a freshman forward for the Rockets. Sherry, in foul trouble for most of the game, had six points on a pair of triples. Teresa did not score in five minutes of action.
The Falcons continue a three-game road swing with a Saturday (Jan. 15) game at Ohio University. That contest is set for a 3:00 p.m. start. BG then heads to Kent for a Monday night (Jan. 17) tilt against the KSU Golden Flashes.
