DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her second season at her alma mater, and has a record of 17-26. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 13th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 199-145 (.578). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU brings a 4-12 overall record into the week, and the Falcons are 2-4 in MAC play heading into the WMU game. Last week, the Falcons played three times on the road. BGSU lost to arch-rival Toledo, 83-63, Tuesday (Jan. 11) before recording a 79-74 victory at Ohio Saturday (Jan. 15). Last night (Jan. 17), the Brown and Orange lost to Kent, 106-84, in a game that was much closer than the score indicated.
The Falcons are 1-3 at home, 2-6 on the road and 1-3 in neutral-site contests.
Sophomore forward Francine Miller leads the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 17.9 points and 7.4 boards per game, and is averaging 20.2 points per MAC outing. Miller tied the school single-game record with 35 points at Kent. She is shooting .483 from the field, .468 from three-point range and .828 from the free-throw line, leading the team in the first two categories and ranking second from the stripe. Miller also ranks second on the Falcons in both assists (2.2 apg) and steals (1.6 spg).
Junior guard Angie Farmer is second on the team with 12.8 points per game. Farmer has started eight games, including the last seven, and she leads the Falcons in three-pointers made (46) and free-throw accuracy (.857). Farmer is shooting .459 from the floor and .438 from three-point land to place second on the team in each category.
Farmer had a career-high 24 points, including 21 in the second half, in the win at Ohio.
Senior forward Sherry Kahle is third on the team in scoring (9.9) and second in rebounding (7.0).
Junior forward Afra Smith and senior point guard Jaymee Wappes round out the team's top-five in scoring with 8.0 and 6.8 points per game, respectively. Wappes leads the Falcons in both assists (6.0 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).
Kahle, Miller, Smith and Wappes have started all 16 games, while Farmer and sophomore center Dana Western have started eight and six, respectively.
BG ended the 1998-99 campaign with a 13-14 overall record, and the Falcons finished in third place in the East Division of the MAC with a 9-7 league record and earned the fifth seed for the MAC Tournament.
BGSU is shooting .415 from the field this year, while the opponents are shooting .416. The Falcons are scoring 72.1 points per contest, but allowing 80.3. BGSU is averaging 36.8 boards per game to the opponents' 43.4. The Falcons have shot .365 from three-point land, making 141 treys in 386 attempts. BGSU led the nation with 8.38 three-pointers made per game as of last Tuesday morning (Jan. 11), and that figure stands at 8.81 treys per game heading into the WMU contest.
SCOUTING WMU: Western Michigan will bring a 7-7 overall record into Anderson Arena. The Broncos are 4-0 in MAC play after Monday's 87-47 dismantling of visiting Buffalo. WMU played a brutal non-conference schedule that included the likes of Illinois, Colorado, Stanford, Iowa State and Georgia Tech. The team's other MAC wins came against Toledo, Marshall and Akron. Individually, freshman center Kristin Koetsier leads the team with 21.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Senior forward Shelsea Erving, the third-leading scorer in school history, is averaging 16.2 points, while senior forward Danielle Mueller has 9.9 points and 8.2 boards. Twin sophomore guards Brooke and Brianne Gallert round out the probable starters. They are scoring 6.6 and 5.5 points, respectively, and rank one-two in the MAC in assist/turnover ratio. Brooke leads the team in assists (6.3 apg) and steals (1.8 spg), while Brianne has dished out 5.4 assists per contest. WMU went 19-10 overall last year, including 11-5 in MAC play. Head coach Ron Stewart is 33-36 in his third year, all in Kalamazoo.
SCOUTING MIAMI: Miami is 9-6 overall and in second place in the MAC's East Division with a 3-2 slate. The RedHawks play at Central Michigan tomorrow (Jan. 19) before hosting BG Saturday. MU has won three of the last four games, including the last two, over Northern Illinois (85-69, Jan. 13) and Marshall ( 66-55, Jan. 15). Individually, junior forward Jenny Martin leads MU's balanced scoring attack with 12.1 points per game. Freshman guard Heather Cusick is second with 11.9 points per contest, including 22 at Marshall. Cusick leads the team in both assists (4.6 apg) and steals (2.2 spg). Senior guard Jamie Stewart is averaging 9.7 points per game, while senior center AuBree Hamilton is scoring 8.6 points per game. Hamilton leads the RedHawks in both rebounding (8.7 rpg) and blocked shots (1.8 bpg). Senior forward Lindsay Winkler rounds out MU's probable starting five. A year ago, the RedHawks finished 11-15 overall and 7-9 in conference play. Maria Fantanarosa is 20-21 in her second year at her alma mater. She is 27-41 in her third season as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 2-1). BGSU holds advantages of 23-15 over Western Michigan and 28-17 against Miami.
The Falcons are 12-7 all-time in home games vs. WMU, but the Broncos broke a five-game BG win streak with a 66-63 win at Anderson last year (Dec. 13, 1998). The Broncos completed the series sweep with a 67-56 conquest in Kalamazoo two months later (Feb. 13, 1999). BG had won three-straight home games vs. the Broncos prior to last season.
BGSU is 12-8 in road games vs. Miami, and the Falcons have won the last two games at Millett Hall, including a 94-84 triumph in last year's only meeting (Jan. 23, 1999). Overall, BG had won the last four games in the series. Prior to that streak, MU had taken five-straight contests from the Brown and Orange.
LAST WEEK: The Falcons went 1-2 on the road last week ... despite 15 second-half points from Francine Miller, tht Falcons fell, 83-63, to host Toledo Tuesday (Jan. 11) in the latest battle for Northwest Ohio bragging rights ... the first half saw 13 lead changes and seven ties before the Rockets took a two-point margin into the break ... UT never trailed in the second half, and opened the lead to 10 points after a 12-4 run to start the half ... the Falcons fought back to within three points with a 7-0 run that included a pair of treys from Dana Western ... Western had her second consecutive double-digit scoring effort off the bench, with 10 points on 4-of-5 overall shooting ... the hosts, however, kept bombing away from three-point land, and got the lead back out to double digits ... after a Miller layup made the score 65-59 with eight minutes left, the Rockets held the Falcons to just four points the rest of the night ... by contrast, UT scored 18 more markers, including the last 12 at the charity stripe ... on the evening, UT went 13-of-29 (.448) from three-point land ... Adriane Bryant led four Rockets in double figures with 21 points, and she added 11 assists ... Miller led the Falcons with 17 points and nine boards, while Afra Smith scored 12 points ... on Saturday (Jan. 15), Angie Farmer scored 21 of her career-high 24 points in the second half as the Falcons recorded a five-point road win, 79-74, at Ohio ... in the first half, the host Bobcats led by 11 points, 18-7, with 13:23 left ... BGSU, however, rallied to take a one-point lead into halftime, 30-29 ... the Falcons closed the half with a 10-1 run over the final 6:19 ... in the second half, BGSU took the lead for good at the 10-minute mark when Farmer made a jumper to make the score 53-51 ... that shot came after Farmer had hit three-point shots on three successive trips down the floor ... Farmer scored 11-straight BG points in a span of 1:20, including the three treys in a 50-second time frame ... Ohio pulled within one point three times, but could never even the score down the stretch ... the Bobcats trailed by two points with four minutes left before Miller scored four-straight points to give BGSU a 70-64 advantage with 2:32 remaining ... the Bobcats kept clawing back, though, and got within one point after a pair of Lisa Hindenlang free throws with 45.2 seconds left ... the Falcons worked the shot clock down on the ensuing possession, and a Farmer running jumper with 16.2 seconds remaining gave BG a three-point lead at 77-74 ... OU's Cathy Szall missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with five seconds left ... Karen Stocz grabbed the rebound, was fouled and swished two free throws with 4.3 seconds left to clinch the win ... in addition to Farmer's game-high scoring total, Miller added 19 points and a team-best eight rebounds ... Jaymee Wappes, who played all 40 minutes, had 10 points and nine assists ... she added four steals ... Ohio was led by Jacquie Negrelli and Lori Moorman with 14 points apiece ... the Falcons held a 40-37 rebounding edge, including a 22-14 margin in the second half ... BGSU made 11 three-pointers (six by Farmer) in 33 attempts, while holding the 'Cats to a 3-of-20 performance from long range ... the final score makes it appear that Monday's (Jan. 17) Kent game was a blowout ... in fact, it was anything but ... despite a school record-tying 35 points from Miller, host KSU pulled away late for a 106-84 win ... the Golden Flashes got 33 points from senior Dawn Zerman, but the win was anything but easy ... KSU scored the first five points of the game, and the Flashes broke out to a 17-6 lead five minutes in ... the Falcons would not go away, however ... BG closed within five points on several occasions, and the Falcons got within four points before a late Kent run built the lead to 10 points at the half ... the Flashes scored the first two points of the second half before the Falcons began to rally ... BG scored the next eight points, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Miller and Sherry Kahle, to cut the KSU lead to 54-50 ... the Brown and Orange, the nation's leaders in three-pointers made, had success from behind the arc all night, tying the school record with 14 successful treys ... BG's 36 attempts from beyond the arc set a new school standard ... the Falcons kept chipping away, with a Wappes "three" and a Smith free throw cutting the margin to two points, 58-56, with 13:54 remaining ... but, BG would get no closer ... Kent, leading by just five points with 6:54 left, began to pull away ... then, in the final three minutes, Kent went to the free-throw line 11 times, sinking every toss ... the Flashes and Falcons each missed seven free throws in the game, but KSU went to the line a whopping 45 times to the Falcons' 17 ... in addition to Miller's record-tying total, the Falcons got 13 points from Wappes and 12 from Kahle ... Miller made six three-pointers, while Kahle sank four and Wappes three ... five Golden Flashes were in double figures, led by Zerman.
GOING FOR 200: BG coach Dee Knoblauch's next victory will be her 200th as a collegiate head coach ... Knoblauch, in her 13th season overall, enters the WMU game with a record of 199-144, for a winning percentage of .580.
MILLER BACK TO FORM: Sophomore Francine Miller was held to a season-low four points in the first Kent meeting, but she bounced back in a big way Monday ... in the return match, Miller tied the school record with 35 points against the Golden Flashes ... she made a career-high 12 field goals, and tied her career best with six three-pointers ... since that first KSU game, Miller has averaged 23.4 points per contest ... that average includes a then career-high 28 points at Central Michigan, including 20 in the second half ... she also scored 18 points vs. Buffalo, 17 at Toledo and 19 against Ohio ... the school record of 35 points was originally set by Jackie Motycka (Dec. 12, 1987, vs. Washington State) ... that mark was tied by Jacki Raterman (Feb. 9, 1999, vs. Ball State) last year.
FARMER ON FIRE: Junior guard Angie Farmer had a stellar game at Ohio Saturday ... she scored a career-high 24 points, including 21 in the second half ... in that second stanza, Farmer scored 11 points in a span of just 1:20 ... in fact, Farmer made three three-point shots on as many BG trips down the floor, in a 50-second span ... with the shot clock winding down and BG up by one, Farmer hit a running jumper in the lane to put the Falcons up, 77-74, with just 16.2 ticks on the clock ... Farmer was 9-of-13 from the floor in the game, including 6-of-10 from long range ... she hit 8-of-10 shots (5-of-7 from three-point land) in the second half.
SISTER ACT: Senior Sherry Kahle faced her sister's team last Tuesday (Jan. 11) in what will likely be the only collegiate meeting between the two ... Kahle's younger sister, Teresa, is a freshman forward for Toledo ... Sherry, in foul trouble for most of the game, had six points on a pair of three-pointers ... Teresa did not score in five minutes of action.
WEARY WAPPES: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Falcons with an average of 34.8 minutes played per game ... over the last nine contests, Wappes has played 344 of the 360 minutes ... Wappes played all 40 minutes vs. UNC Charlotte, Central Michigan, Toledo and Ohio during that stretch ... she missed one minute vs. both Washington State (collided with Sherry Kahle while diving for a loose ball) and Hampton (collided with a Lady Pirate player) due to injuries ... in the latter contest, she was back at the scorer's table almost immediately, ready to check into the game ... Wappes played "only" 37 minutes against Kent (first meeting) and 38 vs. Buffalo ... Wappes, in foul trouble for much of Monday's KSU game, played just 31 minutes ... in the last nine games, she has dished out 64 assists (7.1 apg) while committing just 38 turnovers ... she also has had 81 points, an average of 9.0 per game ... despite the foul trouble at Kent, Wappes managed to score a career-best 13 points and add eight helpers.
YOU MAY FIRE WHEN READY, MA'AM: With at least 11 games remaining in the 1999-2000 season, the Falcons already have broken the school seasonal record for three-point shots made ... last year, BG broke the then-records for both three-pointers attempted and made ... the Falcons made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts ... those totals shattered the old records of 97 triples made and 296 attempted, set by the 1994-95 squad ... this year, through 16 games, BGSU has attempted 386 treys, making 141 ... that is an average of 8.81 three-pointers made and 24.1 attempted per game ... those numbers project to 238 successful "threes" in 651 attempts over a 27-game schedule.
THEY'RE FIRING AWAY, TOO: Believe it or not, opponents have hoisted a total of 411 shots from behind the arc, an average of 25.7 per game ... BG foes have made 140 treys this year ... the opponents have taken at least 15 three-point shots in every game but one (Kent tried just 13 in the first meeting), and have shot 20 or more treys 10 times ... the opponent has taken 41 three-point attempts on three occasions this season.

FALCONS SET MORE RECORDS: As a team, the Falcons tied a school record by making 14 three-pointers at Kent Monday ... that ties the record set vs. Ole Miss in November ... the Falcons broke the school record for treys attempted, with 36 vs. Kent ... the "old" record of 35 was set vs. Hampton in late December ... entering the season, the school record for three-point shots made in a game was 12 ... BG has hit double digits in that area six times this year ... BG's single-game record for three-pointers attempted was 29 heading into the 1999-2000 campaign ... the Falcons have surpassed that total four times.
NATIONAL LEADERS: The NCAA released the latest women's basketball statistics last Tuesday (Jan. 11), and the Falcons were listed in several three-point shooting categories ... individually, junior Angie Farmer was ranked among the national leaders in three-point field-goals per game ... Farmer was tied for 14th with a 2.9 average ... sophomore Francine Miller was 19th in the country in three-point percentage, at .477 ... as a team, the Falcons led the nation in three-pointers made per game, with 8.4, and BG was 13th in free-throw pct., at .752 ... currently, Farmer is averaging 2.88 treys, while Miller's three-point pct. is .468 ... the Falcons are now draining 8.81 triples per game and shooting .749 from the charity stripe ... the next NCAA stats are scheduled to be released late tonight (Jan. 18) or early Wednesday (Jan. 19).
SMITH LEAVES TEAM: Freshman point guard Regina Smith has left the BGSU women's basketball team ... Smith, who left the team Jan. 9, cited a lack of playing time as the reason for her departure.
WHO WAS THAT MASKED WOMAN?: Senior Sherry Kahle has worn a protective mask in each of the last five games ... Kahle donned the clear mask after suffering a black eye and a bruised cheekbone in the Washington State game, and having the injury reaggravated several times since ... Kahle first wore the mask in the Central Michigan game (Jan. 6).
