Bowling Green State University assistant softball coach Amy Kyler currently leads the Women's Pro Softball League in earned run average, according to the latest WPSL statistics. Kyler, who pitches for the Akron Racers during the BGSU off-season, has an ERA of 1.17 in 36 innings of work.
Kyler, who had a streak of 25 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings earlier in the season, threw a complete-game four-hitter and did not allow an earned run as the Racers downed the visiting Georgia Pride, 3-2 in nine innings, Friday (June 4). On Sunday (June 6), Kyler again earned the victory as Akron downed Georgia by a 13-5 score.
Kyler actually had an ERA of 0.48 after Friday's game, before surrendering five runs in Sunday's win. On the year, she has allowed 24 hits in her 36 innings. She has walked eight batters and fanned 24. Kyler ranks fifth in the league in strikeouts. She is tied for third in the league with four wins (4-1 record).
As a team, the Racers lead the six-team league with a 1.68 ERA.
Interestingly, the entire Akron pitching staff has Mid-American Conference ties. Carla Brookbank played for Kent, and later served as the team's pitching coach. The other Racer hurler, Sarah Dawson, is an assistant coach at Marshall.
Kyler, a native of Marshallville, Ohio, played collegiately at Cleveland State. She spent the last two years with the Carolina Diamonds and earned a start in last year's All-Star Game.

Akron, 10-7 in the league, currently sits in second place, a game behind Tampa Bay. Akron hosts third-place Durham (10-8) for a weekend series, beginning tomorrow (June 10).
WPSL games are played each Thursday through Sunday, with the Racers' 60-game regular-season schedule ending August 22. The league playoffs will be held in late August.
