Falcons Hosts Bucknell And Western Michigan This Week

UPCOMING GAMES ...
BG travels to Marshall on Friday, Oct. 15 (5:00 p.m.) before returning home to face Northern Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 17 (1:00 p.m.). The Falcon-Huskie match will be BG's final home MAC match this season.
THE SERIES ...
Bowling Green has faced the Broncos of Western Michigan 26 times, the fifth most of any Falcon opponent. BG leads the all-time series with a 22-3-1 (.865) mark, and has outscored WMU 71-18. The Falcons have won the last 10 meetings, recording shutouts in seven of those matches.
BG won the first 11 meetings (1971-1983), before going 1-3-1 from 1984 to 1988.
PREVIEWING UPCOMING OPPONENTS...
The Bison have outscored their opponents, 17-11, and are led offensively by sophomore forward Sam Chamovitz (5-2--12, 3 GWG), senior midfielder Brian Carr (4-1--9) and junior midfielder Sam Graziano (3-3--9). Senior goalkeeper Nathan Fitzgerald has played all but three minutes this year and has recorded a 1.17 goals-against average with three shutouts.
Western Michigan has compiled a 1-10-1 mark under second-year head coach Chris Karwoski (Vermont, '91). The Broncos lone win came on Sept. 7 (1-0 OT at No. 16 Notre Dame). WMU has lost three matches by a single tally.
After being shutout in three consecutive matches, the Broncos have scored at least one goal in each of their last five matches but have an 0-4-1 mark in those contests. In WMU's lone match this past week, they lost at home to Buffalo by a 5-1 score with Trevor Garrison scoring his first of the campaign.
The Broncos are led offensively by senior forward Pat Morrison (2-2--6), freshman forward Rob Friend (2-1--5), and Garrison (1-1--3), a sophomore midfielder. Senior goalkeeper Eric Pogue (1-10-1, 2.26 goals-against average, one shutout) has played all but 45 minutes between the pipes this year.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEK ...
The Wildcats had scored six goals two days prior in a home shutout of Marshall, but the BG defense limited UK to 16 shots and only one over the final 24 minutes.
BG had 10 shots but only one was on target, by Jason Bryant with 8:25 remaining in the match. Falcon goalkeeper Ty Fowler made seven saves, while UK netminder Brian O'Leary made one save.
Kentucky was whistled for 23 fouls plus four yellow cards, with Wildcat Jason Bell receiving his second yellow of the match with 14:08 remaining. BG had 11 fouls and two yellow cards for the match.
NOTES ...
Senior midfielder Chris Dore leads the team in shots (30), shots on goal (15) and goals (5).
Senior forward Bobby Biggs is first in points (12) and assists (4), while ranking second on the squad in goals (4).
Senior goalkeeper Ty Fowler has played every minute of every game this season recording a 1.96 goals-against average and two shutouts.
Five Falcons have started all 10 matches -- seniors Bobby Biggs, Chris Dore, Ty Fowler and Kevin Jackson, and junior Tommy Thomas. Eleven other Falcons have started at least one match.
BG has been shutout in two of its last three matches after scoring 14 goals in its first seven matches.
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has two home matches this week. On Friday, the Falcons face Bucknell at 4:00 p.m. before playing five consecutive MAC matches beginning with the Sunday, Oct. 10 match against Western Michigan (2:00 p.m.).
Friday's match against the Bison of Bucknell will be the first for the Falcon men's soccer program.
Bucknell, a member of the Patriot League, is led by first-year head coach Brendan Nash (Trenton State, '94). BU had a 4-14-0 overall mark last season and returns nine starters from last year's squad. The Bison took a 7-2-0 mark into last Saturday's match at Army (result not available). Bucknell plays at Philadelphia Textile on Tuesday (Oct. 5), before heading to BG.
The Falcon defense played another strong game but Kentucky was able to score the lone goal of the match at the 65:31 mark when Todd Stonestreet's chip from approximately 30 yards out was able to find the back of the net.
Bowling Green, which has recorded 199 shutouts in its storied history, will look to garner #200 this weekend with two home matches.
