TODAY's TOP STORY - THREE-POINT RECORDS: With at least eight games remaining for the Falcons in the 1999-2000 campaign, BGSU already has set the school single-season records for both three-point field goals made (172) and attempted (465) ... the "old" records, set just last year, were 135 treys made in 400 attempts ... the MAC record for successful "threes" in a season is 234, set by the 1993-94 teams at both Kent (28 games) and Toledo (32 games) ... BGSU is currently on a pace to sink 244 treys over a 27-game schedule ... the NCAA record for three-pointers in a season is 289, set by Colorado State last year.
DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her second season at her alma mater, and has a record of 18-28. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 13th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 200-147 (.576). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
KNOBLAUCH HITS 200: BG's 94-72 win over Akron Wednesday (Jan. 26) marked Dee Knoblauch's 200th victory as a collegiate head coach ... Knoblauch, in her 13th season overall, enters the Marshall game with a record of 200-147, for a winning percentage of .576.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU brings a 5-14 overall record into the week, and the Falcons are 3-6 in MAC play heading into the MU game. BGSU's 22-point win over Akron broke a three-game losing streak.
The Falcons are 2-4 at home, 2-7 on the road and 1-3 in neutral-site contests.
Sophomore forward Francine Miller leads the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 17.8 points and 7.5 boards per game, and is averaging 19.3 points per MAC outing. Miller tied the school single-game record with 35 points at Kent two weeks ago. She is shooting .486 from the field, .459 from three-point range and .829 from the free-throw line, leading the team in the first two categories and ranking second from the stripe. Miller also ranks second on the Falcons in both assists (2.1 apg) and steals (1.4 spg).
Junior guard Angie Farmer is second on the team with 12.7 points per game. Farmer has started 11 games, including the last 10, and she leads the Falcons in three-pointers made (a school-record 56) and free-throw accuracy (.833). Farmer is shooting .462 from the floor and .452 from three-point land to place second on the team in each category.
Senior forward Sherry Kahle is third on the team in scoring (10.1) and second in rebounding (6.9).
Junior forward Afra Smith and senior point guard Jaymee Wappes round out the team's top-five in scoring with 8.2 and 6.6 points per game, respectively. Smith scored a season-best 18 points against Akron, while Wappes leads the Falcons in both assists (6.4 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).
Kahle, Miller, Smith and Wappes have started all 19 games, while Farmer and sophomore center Dana Western have started 11 and six, respectively.
BG ended the 1998-99 campaign with a 13-14 overall record, and the Falcons finished third in the MAC's East Division with a 9-7 league slate. BG earned the fifth seed for the MAC Tournament.
BGSU is shooting .417 from the field this year, while the opponents are shooting .423. The Falcons are scoring 72.8 points per contest, but allowing 81.3. BGSU is averaging 36.6 boards per game to the opponents' 43.5. The Falcons have shot .370 from three-point land, making a school-record 172 treys in a school-record 465 attempts. BGSU led the nation with 8.67 three-pointers made per game as of Tuesday morning (Jan. 25), and -- after a school-record 16 triples in the Akron win -- that figure stands at 9.05 treys per game heading into the Marshall contest.
SCOUTING MARSHALL: Marshall will bring a 6-13 overall record into the week, and the Thundering Herd is 0-8 in MAC play heading into tonight's (Jan. 31) game at Ohio. The BGSU game will mark Marshall's fourth in a seven-day span. The Herd lost close games at home to Buffalo, 54-49, Thursday (Jan. 27) and Akron, 60-53, Saturday (Jan. 29). First-year transfer Yashico Stevens leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 13.3 points and 6.6 boards per game. Stevens, a junior forward, is joined in double digits by junior guard Toni Patillo, who averages 10.7 points. Patillo leads the Herd in both assists and steals. Senior guard Brandy Robertson and junior guard Marisa Williams average 7.7 and 7.2 points, respectively. MU went 4-22 overall and 1-15 in MAC play last year. Head coach Juliene Simpson, 18-56 in her third year in Huntington, is 290-308 in her 22nd year as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 2-1), and BGSU holds a 6-0 advantage over Marshall.
The Falcons are undefeated in two road games against the Thundering Herd, a three-point decision in 1976-77 and an 86-81 triumph two seasons ago. In last year's only meeting, the Falcons captured a 70-57 victory at Anderson Arena (Jan. 30, 1999).
LAST WEEK: Three-pointers, and three-point records, were falling at Anderson Arena Wednesday (Jan. 26), as the Falcons beat Akron, 94-72 ... BG gave head coach Dee Knoblauch her 200th career win in record fashion, draining 16 three-point field goals in 38 attempts ... both totals set new school single-game marks and tied the MAC records ... after hitting "only" one three-pointer in the first eight minutes, the Falcons caught fire from long range ... senior co-captains Jaymee Wappes and Sherry Kahle hit two triples each in a total of less than two minutes ... moments later, it was Angie Farmer's turn ... the junior hit three long-range shots, the last from several feet beyond the arc, in a two-minute stretch, and Francine Miller followed with BG's 10th trey of the half to give the Falcons a 16-point lead ... BGSU led by that margin at the half ... in the second half, Akron never got closer than 12 points, and BG pushed the lead over 20 points for good on a Kahle trey at the 10:35 mark ... that triple was the fourth in a series of five BG "threes" in a span of 2:14 ... Kahle's second three-pointer in that stretch, at the 10:02 mark, set a new school single-game record, and Farmer's trey 25 seconds later gave the Falcons 16 on the night ... BGSU led by as many as 35 points, at 94-59, before Akron scored the final 13 points of the game ... Miller, who made her first six shots of the evening, finished 10-of-15 from the floor and had 29 points in just 26 minutes of action ... Farmer had 18 points, as did Afra Smith, whose total represented a season high ... Smith went 7-of-10 from the floor ... Kahle had 14 points, as well as game highs of nine rebounds and four steals ... Wappes scored nine points and tied her career high with 11 assists ... she added six rebounds and three steals ... the Falcon starters outscored the Akron starting five, 88-53 ... Abby Hoy led Akron with 21 points, while Katie Hank added 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
FALCONS TIE MAC RECORDS: BGSU, as mentioned, set school records and tied Mid-American Conference marks for three-pointers made and attempted Wednesday (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons drained 16 treys in 38 attempts in the win over Akron ... BGSU's "old" school records, set earlier this season, were 14 treys made and 36 attempted ... the MAC records follow:
Three-Pointers Made, Game *
16 Toledo vs. Akron, 2/21/96 16 Miami vs. Ohio, 2/23/99 16 Miami vs. BGSU, 1/22/2000 16 BGSU vs. Akron, 1/26/2000 * for all games as well as MAC games only
Three-Pointers Attempted, Game
38 Kent vs. Central Michigan, 1/23/91 38 BGSU vs. Akron, 1/26/2000 (MAC games only, Kent attempted 44 in a non-conference game)
ANOTHER GAME, ANOTHER RECORD: Against Akron, BGSU set school single-game records for three-pointers made and attempted ... setting records is nothing new for this year's edition of the Brown and Orange ... in fact, BG's record totals (16 treys made, 38 attempted) broke marks that had been set just nine days earlier ... the Falcons tied the then-school record by making 14 three-pointers at Kent (Jan. 17) ... the Falcons had broke the school record for treys attempted, with 36 vs. Kent ... the "old" record of 35 was set vs. Hampton in late December ... entering the season, the school record for three-point shots made in a game was 12 ... BG has hit double digits in that area seven times this year ... BG's single-game record for three-pointers attempted was 29 heading into the 1999-2000 campaign ... the Falcons have surpassed that total five times.
QUOTEBOOK
Akron coach Roxanne Allen on BGSU sophomore Francine Miller:
"Francine is Francine, she's having a sensational year. She was definitely a concern for us coming in. It wasn't a lack of respect (that enabled Miller to score 29 points), it was a lack of execution. Katie Hank is one of our better defenders, normally, and did not have a great night. But Francine, really, just smoked her."
"You have to respect (Miller's) three-point ability ... We were going to pressure the shot, knowing she wanted to drive, and she just schooled us. It didn't matter, if we were out on her, she drove around us. And, if we gave her an inch, she hit the 'three.' And, I can't feel too bad, because she's doing it against everybody. Nobody's shut her down. She's just having an outstanding year, she's an excellent player. She's got an aggressive mentality that she's going to get it done, and that's probably across the board for most of Dee's kids. They've got her mentality, that's how she was as a player."
FARMER IN THE ZONE: Junior Angie Farmer made six three-pointers in the win over Akron Wednesday, in the process setting the BGSU single-season record in that category ... Farmer now has 56 successful treys this year, surpassing the old mark of 53 ... that record was held by Sara Puthoff (1994-95) ... Farmer's NBA-range "three" in the first half of the UA game enabled her to tie Puthoff, and she captured the record outright with her first triple of the second half.
MILLER BACK TO FORM: Sophomore Francine Miller was held to a season-low four points in the first Kent meeting, but she bounced back in a big way ... in the return match, Miller tied the school record with 35 points against the Golden Flashes ... since that first KSU game, Miller has averaged 21.2 points per contest ... that average includes a then career-high 28 points at Central Michigan ... she scored 29 points against Akron, and has had point totals of 18 vs. Buffalo, 17 at Toledo, 19 against Ohio and 12 vs. WMU and Miami ... the school record of 35 points was originally set by Jackie Motycka (Dec. 12, 1987, vs. Washington State) ... that mark was tied by Jacki Raterman (Feb. 9, 1999, vs. Ball State) last year.
WEARY WAPPES: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Falcons with an average of 35.1 minutes played per game ... over the last 12 contests, Wappes has played 454 of the 480 minutes, an average of 37.8 per game ... Wappes has played all 40 minutes four times during that stretch ... during that time, she has dished out 89 assists (7.4 apg) while committing just 47 turnovers ... she also has had 98 points, an average of 8.2 per game.
YOU MAY FIRE WHEN READY, MA'AM: With at least eight games remaining in the 1999-2000 season, the Falcons already have shattered the school seasonal records for three-point shots attempted and made ... last year, BG broke both records by making 135 treys in an even 400 attempts ... those totals smashed the old records of 97 triples made and 296 attempted, set by the 1994-95 squad ... this year, through 19 games, BGSU has attempted 465 treys, making 172 ... that is an average of 9.05 three-pointers made and 24.5 attempted per game ... those numbers project to 244 successful "threes" in 661 attempts over a 27-game schedule.
THEY'RE FIRING AWAY, TOO: Believe it or not, opponents have hoisted a total of 484 shots from behind the arc, an average of 25.5 per game ... BG foes have made 174 treys this year ... the opponents have taken at least 15 three-point shots in all but one game (Kent tried just 13 in the first meeting), and have shot 20 or more treys 12 times ... the foes have taken 41 three-point attempts three times this season.
NATIONAL LEADERS: The NCAA released the latest women's basketball statistics last Tuesday (Jan. 25), and the Falcons were listed in several categories ... individually, junior Angie Farmer was ranked among the national leaders in three-point field-goals per game ... Farmer was tied for 19th with a 2.8 average ... sophomore Francine Miller was 24th in the country in three-point percentage, at .449 ... as a team, the Falcons continued to lead the nation in three-pointers made per game, with 8.7, and BG was 16th in free-throw pct., at .747 ... after the Akron game, BGSU has improved in all four of those categories ... currently, Farmer is averaging 2.95 treys, while Miller's three-point pct. is .459 ... the Falcons are now draining 9.05 triples per game and shooting .753 from the charity stripe ... the next NCAA stats are scheduled to be released late Tuesday (Feb. 1) or early Wednesday (Feb. 2).
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: A number of current Falcons already are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... sophomore Francine Miller currently ranks as the all-time BGSU leader in career three-point percentage, while junior Angie Farmer is second ... Farmer is third all-time with her 89 three-pointers made, while Miller is fifth with 68 ... seniors Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes and are close behind with 63 and 59, respectively ... Kahle is fourth all-time with 205 three-point attempts, followed in succession by Farmer (201), Wappes (173) and Miller (153) ... on the single-season lists, Farmer now owns the school record with 56 treys made this season ... Miller has made 34 treys (good for a sixth-place tie) and is shooting .459 from three-point land this year ... that percentage, if she can maintain it, would be the top average in school history ... Farmer is currently second on that list ... the complete lists can be found at right.

WAPPES DISHES 'EM OUT: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes is moving up the BGSU career assists list ... Wappes, after tying her career high with 11 assists vs. Akron, currently ranks fifth all-time with 344 helpers in her career ... her total of 121 this year is 10 more than her total for all of last season ... Wappes needs three more assists to tie Cathy Koch for fourth place on the career list ... someone named Dee Knoblauch holds the career record, with 673.
FALCON NOTES: The Falcons committed just eight personal fouls vs. Akron, tying the school record for fewest fouls in a MAC game ... after averaging 19.3 fouls per game over the first 16 contests, BG has averaged 9.0 in the last three games ... the NCAA's top three three-point totals of the season have all come in games involving Bowling Green ... the Falcons were the victim on two occasions, as Ole Miss made 17 treys against the Brown and Orange (Nov. 26), while Miami hit 16 (Jan. 22) ... BGSU made 16 against Akron Wednesday ... in that Ole Miss game, the Falcons and Lady Rebels combined to make 31 three-point field goals in 75 attempts ... both totals set new NCAA Division I records for two teams in a game ... BGSU has made at least five three-pointers in every game but one this winter ... in the Akron game, the Falcon starters outscored the Akron starting five, 88-53 ... junior transfer Afra Smith had a season-high 18 points in that game, while Kim Griech pulled down nine rebounds, the most of her young collegiate career ... senior Sherry Kahle has played in all 103 games since her arrival on the BGSU campus in the fall of 1996 ... she has started 75 contests in her career, including the last 46 games ... Kahle is BG's top active scorer with 804 points ... Kahle has worn a protective mask in each of the last seven games ... she donned the clear mask after suffering a black eye and a bruised cheekbone in the Washington State game, and having the injury reaggravated several times thereafter ... junior Angie Farmer has hit at least one three-pointer in the last 13 games, and in 17 of this year's 19 contests ... she tied her own school record with seven treys against Ole Miss, and has had six on three other occasions ... Francine Miller has hit at least one triple in 16 games this year, including the last eight ... she has had double-digit scoring efforts 17 times, including 15 of the last 16 contests ... Jaymee Wappes could threaten the school record for assists in a MAC season ... Wappes has 68 assists through nine conference games, and is on pace to record 120.9 in league play ... Paulette Backstrom holds the school record, with 124 during the 1988-89 MAC campaign.
