The Falcons recorded the team's biggest victory in six years with a five-game marathon triumph (15-12, 4-15, 15-5, 5-15, 15-11) over the RedHawks at Anderson Arena. BGSU captured its first MAC Tournament win since the 1993 season, and the Falcons downed MU for the first time since that same year. BG had lost 12 consecutive matches to the Redskins/RedHawks during that time.
The Brown and Orange came out strong. Senior Heather Greig opened the contest with a service ace, and the Falcons raced to a 5-0 lead. BGSU held leads of 7-3 and 10-4, but the visitors fought back to within 12-11. A pair of kills by senior Kris Pesorda, however, capped off the game.
The visitors never let BG get untracked in the second game, charging to an 8-0 lead. Back-to-back kills by senior Melissa Lewis sparked a 3-0 BG run that cut the deficit to 10-4, but the RedHawks scored the last five points of the game.
The Falcons opened game three just like game one -- with a Greig ace. The Falcons led by a 4-0 count, let the 'Hawks close the gap to 7-5, then reeled off the final eight points. Lewis had six of her team-high 21 kills in that third game.
The RedHawks took a 4-2 lead in game four, but three-straight kills by senior Lori Kemerer gave BG a 5-4 edge. That was all the excitement for Falcon fans in that particular game, however, as MU proceeded to score 11 consecutive points and force the decisive fifth game.
MU raced out to a quick 3-0 lead, and the RedHawks led by a 5-2 score before an Amber Vorst kill started a 5-1 run for BG. Vorst, a sophomore, led the Falcons with a .400 hitting percentage on the evening.
A solo block by junior JoAnna Papageorgiou tied the contest at 5-5, and the Falcons took a 7-6 lead moments later. The visitors scored the next three points, but BG tacked together a 3-0 run and took the lead at 11-10 on a Kemerer kill. Kemerer had a hand in four of the final five BG points.
Miami tied the match at 11, but a Vorst kill gave BG a lead it would not relinquish. A Kemerer kill put BG up, 13-11, and Kemerer and Greig combined to block a Miami attack attempt, setting the stage for the match point.
Seconds later, Kemerer, who had 15 kills on the evening, provided the biggest kill of her career. Kemerer, known for her ferocious kills, softly placed a ball toward an uncovered area deep in the corner. When the ball landed just inside the line, the Falcons had the victory.
Lewis's 21 kills paced five Falcons in double digits. Pesorda and Kemerer had 16 and 15, respectively, while Vorst added 14 and Papageorgiou 12. Defensively, freshman Kate Yeo had 20 digs to lead six Falcons in double digits in that category. Greig's 67 assists fell just one shy of her career high.
Kemerer's final block assist of the night did more than place the Falcons a point away from the win. The block assist was the 413th of her storied BG career, tying her for the school career lead with Lisa Mika (1988-91).
The Brown and Orange advance to take on top seeded Ball State at BSU's University Arena. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 26). In the first match of the night, #6 Kent will take on #2 Western Michigan at 5:00 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 27).
