Michelle Lisy scored a pair of goals late in the second half to give the Falcons a 3-3 tie with host Marshall. Stephanie Heller scored BGSU's other goal.
With the Falcons trailing, 3-1, and exactly four minutes remaining in the second half, BGSU coach Tom Piccirillo substituted for goalkeeper Sarah Gawel. Beth Wechsler, a defender, put on a goalie's jersey, and the Falcons played with an "11th attacker," similar to a "sixth attacker" in hockey. The move paid off in a big way.
The Falcons cut the deficit in half with just 3:18 remaining in the on Lisy's first goal. Melissa Galitz and Jill Conover assisted on the play. Lisy converted a rebound of a Galitz shot that had hit the crossbar.
Lisy scored again with just 26 seconds remaining. Ashley Enser and Mandy Smith assisted on the goal.
The Thundering Herd had taken the lead on Kelly Kennedy's goal with 16:27 left, then went up by two as Erin Steinke scored with just 8:43 remaining in the second half. That set the stage for Lisy's heroics. The teams battled through 30 minutes of scoreless overtime action.
The Herd outshot BG, 20-15, including a 14-8 margin in shots on goal. Gawel made 10 saves in 116:26, while Wechsler was credited with one save in her 3:34 of action in goal. Marshall's Kristina Shamel made five saves on the day.
Lisy, BGSU's career scoring leader, now has six goals on the season, tying her for the team lead with Conover. Lisy now has 33 career points on 12 goals and nine assists.
Autumn Harris and Wechsler picked up assists on Heller's goal.
The Falcons begin a three-match homestand with Friday's (Oct. 15) contest vs. Eastern Michigan. That match will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field. BGSU will end the regular season with six home matches in the last seven contests.
