Bowling Green, Ohio -
Bowling Green State University senior Melissa Lewis (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) has been named the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Lewis earns P-O-W honors for the third time in her Falcon career, and the third time in the last four weeks. Lewis was the outright offensive player of the week three weeks ago (Oct. 11), and she shared the award last week (Oct. 25).
Lewis, a left-side hitter, led the Falcons (15-9 overall, 8-4 MAC) with an average of 6.25 kills per game as the team split a pair of matches last week. BGSU lost a narrow, five-game contest to Eastern Michigan Wednesday (Oct. 27) before winning a three-game match at Marshall Sunday (Oct. 31).
Lewis had 28 kills vs. EMU, and she had 22 kills and hit .341 in the Marshall match. She had double-doubles in each contest, with 16 and 11 digs, respectively. On the week, she averaged 3.38 digs and 1.13 blocks per game.
Lewis has led the Falcons in kills in 21 of this season's 24 matches. She now has 1,154 career kills, placing her sixth all-time at BGSU.
Lewis is the lone MAC player to earn Offensive Player-of-the-Week accolades three times this season. She is also the first volleyball player in school history to earn P-O-W honors three times in the same year.
On the year, Lewis is hitting .293 with a MAC-best 4.75 kills per game. She leads the team in each of those categories, as well as in service aces, and ranks second on the Falcons in digs per game.
BGSU has won nine of the last 10 matches to move into a tie for the East Division lead. The Falcons are deadlocked with Miami at 8-4, with Akron (7-4) a half-game behind and Marshall (7-5) a full game back.
BGSU is preparing for the team's final home weekend of action. The Falcons will host Buffalo Friday (Nov. 5) and Northern Illinois Saturday (Nov. 6). Start time for both matches is 7:00 p.m. at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
